“Fast and with a smile”

Love that this place almost seems like fast food but you can get a glass of wine or sake for super cheap.

“Clearly a labor of love”
Reviewed November 9, 2011

Like many of the other reviewers, I appreciate the great service at this restaurant and the variety it offers in this end of Ithaca.

I had the bento box with fried tofu and peanut sauce. The tofu was phenomenal. Super hot at first, but then the tofu melted in your mouth. This was a nice change from chicken or fish.

I had wished the dressing on the salad wasn't so heavy-handed. A little goes a long way. But the other pieces of the bento were good - especially good for Ithaca. If you are traveling from town that has great Japanese food, you may be disappointed.

I also had a lovely bubble tea -- it's just fun, I can't pass it up -- but it was served in what I would call a beer stein. A heavy, large glass. Odd choice for this drink. A simple pint glass would have been preferable.

Best of luck to the owner who clearly wants to showcase either a love of Japan or his/her home.

“Good food and a good price”
Reviewed September 28, 2011

Friends and I often go here after hiking the nearby gorges. It is very reasonably priced, the food is good, tastes fresh, and the staff are super nice. I'm not a sushi eater, but my friends who do eat it like their offerings especially the spicy tuna roll and the rainbow roll. Personally, I like their bowls with steamed veggies and sauce. Most of the other places in this part of town are chain fast food restaurants and this is a nice break from that.

“Good basic Japanese food at great prices!”
Reviewed July 14, 2011

The CT Bento opened about 4 or 5 months ago (April 2011?). It's a big change from most of the other Japanese resturants in Ithaca in that they don't overcharge for their food. The food is served quickly and is plentiful. Not the largest selection of sushi. The food is more typical of what you would eat for lunch in Japan.

One of their specialties is the Bento Box. A Bento Box is popular in Japan as a take-out lunch. The CT Bento's Bento Box consists of rice, a two dumplings two sushi, salad, a bit of pickled seaweed and a main dish that can be Shrimp Tempura, Chicken, Pork, Beef - and I don't remember what else. The Bento Box goes for between $8.00 to $11.00 depending on the main dish.

A better deal is the Bento bowel. For between $5.95 and $7.95 you get a bowel filled with white or brown rice, sauce, and either meat, fish or tofu. $1.00 more gets steamed vegetables added.

The location is across from a Wendy's on one of the main highways. Good parking in the rear. The decor is light and airy. The open kitchen is clean as are the modern bathrooms. The staff is friendly and will gladly help with your selection. Beer, Wine and Saki are all available.

I live in Ithaca and have been to the other Japanese restaurants in Ithaca. CT Bento Cafe has much of the same food as the more popular Japanese resturants but at far better prices.

“Extremely fresh food and an incredible value.”
Reviewed May 26, 2011

What a great surprise this place was. In an end of town with nothing but fast food, here is a great simple Japanese bento place with super fresh tasty food and an incredibly low price. You really could not ask for a better value for your money.
