Owner description: A visit to Sunnyside is an enchanted adventure in a romantic landscape and a much-loved riverside home that has been charming visitors for generations.Hear about Washington Irving's storied past and how he came to be America's first internationally famous author, best remembered now for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and other short stories. His characters, from Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane to the mysterious Headless Horseman and the comic Rip Van Winkle, are icons in American culture. Even Johnny Depp has added to their global renown.A gently curved path leads to gorgeous views of the Hudson River and reveals the allure of Sunnyside's unique design, its intimate setting, its bucolic grounds, and its association with a beloved man of letters.

“The Author's home”

Another beautiful little home tucked away in the hills overlooking the Hudson River. This is where the author retired after years of travelling the world, writing and learning all he could about the world around him.

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012

Stepping back into time, this was a most enjoyable tour. The only thing I would have done differently is stroll about the grounds and perhaps have come back after the tour and taken a few photos of the outside of the home.
Just be warned that the walk to the home from the parking area is a little bit demanding, not for those in top physical health, but for this who are infirm in any way. It is a walk that can be done, but I am just saying that the home is not right next to the parking lot or the visitor center. There is a certain amount of walking involved.
My tour guide did a very good job of explaining all about Irving and his home and family. I was the only one on that particular tour, a Thursday morning, very overcast, not that many folks on the property at the time. Her name is Linda and she was very knowledgeable and helpful.
This is a place I've always wanted to see, and I stopped here for a tour en route from the Boston area to St Louis. Be careful of directions, be sure you have them down pat, before you venture off the interstate. While signs are in place indicating "Sunnyside", still, it is somewhat of a meandering drive to the actual property, which is very secluded.
It is not right off the Interstate, easy off easy on, so my advice would be to have directions firmly in place before leaving the main highway.

“Gorgeous home, but however----”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2012

-the guide sort of rushed us to the house because she was expecting a busload of people on tour behind us. It was either go now or wait an hour.
Had they told us this up front we could have come back later. We barely had time to use the restroom. She actually asked us if we could walk fast to get ahead. My wife was not pleased with this.
Consequently, we felt rushed to complete the tour. It was supposed to be 45 minutes but was barely 30 minutes.
Outside of that, the house is beautiful and charming, the grounds are pleasant, and most of the staff were thoughtful and informative.

“Excellent tour of Washington Irving's home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2012

Washington Irving bought a 2 room cottage in the 1830s and expanded it to be an 11 room house of different styles, mainly romantic overlooking the Hudson River. It suited his needs and work and also housed his neices and brother. His office and work area had many books including all of his works. There is a small lake he called the Little Mediterranean and many trails and views of the river. We had an excellent one hour guided tour which covered Irving's life and writings as well as the house and grounds. There is also a film about Washington Irving and a gift shop. The tour is $12, ten dollars for seniors. A very informative tour abour one of our most famous writers.

“Beautiful day”

We were there in the fall and it was a beautiful visit. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon, with a lovely, historic house, a writer's life on display and gorgeous countryside for a walk.
