Owner description: Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

I went to Olana on a field trip with my kids for school. I loved it and so did the kids. The tour guides were phenomenal. The hike had magnificent views. I loved it so much, I told my parents about it and THEY went. This is definitely a photogenic place all year round!

Eccentric and eclectic Victorian extravaganza, built by one of the artists who best recognized the commercial potential of landscape painting. Fun and amazing, rather than beautiful. But the surrounding landscape that inspired Frederick Edwin Church is beautiful. We reserved the ride around the property (rather than a 5 mile hike) more than a month in advance and enjoyed it. We reserved timed entry tickets for the house, too.

About five miles away is the Thomas Cole National Historic Site. (Cole taught Church). We easily did the Cole Site in the morning and Olana in the afternoon.

Another example of the rich history in this area. Reserve a spot on a tour so you can see the inside of the house, which is just as awesome as the outside.

Our tour guide, Kimberly, made the history of Olana come alive through her anecdotes and encyclopedic knowledge. And every nook and cranny of the house and grounds is filled with examples of Church's vision for his home and the surrounding landscape.

The hand-stenciled door panels, the tiles surrounding the fireplace mantels, the collected objects, the furniture, the layout of the home, and of course the art, all provide a fascinating glimpse into the life and remarkable work of Church.

So much to look at and absorb. And the river vista is breathtaking. Be sure to book
a spot on a tour in advance, since slots are limited.
