Kapamba Bushcamp - The Bushcamp Company
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 19, 2013

This was our second trip staying at Bushcamp Company properties but our first at Kapamba and we loved it! We had really high expectations and were not disappointed. As we expected, and others have said, the camp staff, food & guides & game viewing were wonderful!

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something special to us about this particular camp. Perhaps it's the openess of our quarters - there's no real door, just metal grating that is closed during the night which gives a feeling of being outdoors but safe & comfortable.... Or maybe it was the 'resident' elephant :)

The cabin/room is smallish compared to Bilimungwe & Chindeni but was nicely layed out & the space is efficient & Bili and Chindeni accomodations are really almost overly spacious - for us anyway.

If/when we return, Kapamba will be a first choice of which of the bushcamps to stay at - no doubt.

Kapamba was our third bushcamp to visit! They keep getting better! Brinsley, our Camp Director, and Mwasie were wonderful hosts. We had 5 children with us and they were wonderful to include and educate them too! The food was divine and the service impeccable. I am not a camper and this was first class!

Room Tip: All are wonderful!

I absolutely love South Luangwa. I love Mfuwe Lodge. I love the Bushcamps. But I really really really love Kapamba. This was my third time there in just over a year and it truly is magical. The location (right at a little bend in the Kapamba River), the stunning and luxurious thatched rooms that look out on the sandbar, and the food (ahhh, the food!!!) are all top-class. But what really makes Kapamba is the staff. Brinsley (host) and Fannuel (guide extraordinaire) see to your needs in a low-key way. They are so knowledgable, but they never come off as know-it-alls. Conversation at dinner just flows so naturally; within hours you feel like you're just hanging out at this super luxurious bushcamp with some new buddies.

Spotted this most recent time (just before Christmas), in addition to the "usual" (elephants, zebra, etc.): wild dogs (literally from my bedroom during post-lunch siesta time), Scarface the Lion (eating an impala dinner), and a pair of African Pitta birds (which are very rare).

I can't wait to go back! Again! :)

Room Tip: There are only four and they all face the river (walled on 3 sides and a beautiful "spiderweb&q...

We spent 2 nights at Kapamba in November. The accomodations were posh but you still have a "bushcamp" feeling. We saw elephants walking across the river and one night an elephant was at a salt lick beside the deck. The food was good (especially the pizza). They addressed the needs of my gluten intolerance knowledgeably and made me excellent gluten free brownies! I can't say enough about our guide Fannuel. He clearly loves nature and sharing it with others. Fannuell is extremely knowledgeable and a born teacher, every walk and drive was fascinating whether we saw a big game animal or not. TIP: don't forget your flashlight, at night there were a fair number of bugs flying around the lights in our room (non biting) and so we preferred to use our flashlights while using the washroom etc. The bushcamp provides a different experience than the lodge, although both are excellent. We spent a few nights at both and were glad we did.

Room Tip: We had the cabin beside the lodge to the left and enjoyed it - I would imagine that they are all ex...

fantastic camp with great staff who can not do enough for you.
we spent 4 wonderful nights here over christmas. We arrived on christmas day and had the best turkey I ever tasted!
Brinsley and Fannuel were excellent hosts. The guiding was excellent with great sightings of game and birds.
The food was superb and plentiful.
The camp was spotlessly clean and in a fantastic location.

Kapamba was our last bush camp and we were not disappointed. It is in a unique location on the Kapamba friver ar from the other camps so you get a great feeling of space and exclusivity. The rooms are fantastic with an open side allowing you to view the bush day and night from your bed or bath. Afternoons cooling in the plunge pool were a real treat. Brinslee the camp host is superb. We were the only guests on our first night so he arranged for us to have a dinner just for the 3 of us - on the beach of the river - heaven. Then we had another surprise the next evening when there were 4 other guests and we were treated to a bush dinner 4km from camp, on the bank of the Luangwa with hippos in the background. Reminiscent of Out of Africa - unforgettable!
Fanuel the guide is great fun and we were treated again to sightings of wild dogs as a wake up call on our first morning. The sightings were not quite up to the high levels at Chindeni but the camp rooms and attention to detail of the camp host made this camp a very close second to Kuyenda.

Room Tip: Rooms furthest from the main eating area are a little more private for those afternoons in the plung...

This was the first of 3 bushcamps we decided to stay in, good game drive on our way in, took 3 hours and we saw leopard, which was great ! At the time we stayed, there was only one other couple, we didn't get the room we requested with double bed, as by coincidence the water pipes of this specific room had broken down that morning...

Our guide, Charles, was really good and gave excellent info (when compared with any other African safari experiences we had , it must be said that Zambia has most knowledgable guides)

The 'room' we got was a bit disappointing, as well as the the total look of the camp, we didn't have the feeling of really being in an African safari camp (we can now compare with the other bushcamps), the room has indeed a sort of metallic bars, which gives you a bit of a weird feeling..
The concrete big 'bath tub' can be seen as a plus.

The camp has little or almost no decoration, the food was ok (although the young 'relief' manager at that time should maybe be taught that guests might go for a second round at lunch/dinner, finding out that there's nothing left because 'management' - we were 4 guests and at that time 4 people from staff ate with us - served themselves quite well.. must be lack of experience, as one of his colleagues mentioned ' to become old an wise, you first have to be young and stupid')

Overall, a good start if we look at the wildlife (which of course is never a guarantee) and guiding, the camp itself didn't excite us at all, mostly because of the concrete and the overall 'feeling'..
