The cottages are beautifully decorated and set up so you feel close to the Bush. The host was wonderfully welcoming and hospitable, and it was a delight to stay there. The Luangwa valley is stunningly beautiful and Malama Umoyo cottages offers a great location from which to explore. Stunning views of the river and sunsets!
On our recent research trip for my Travel Agency in a quest to find that something unusual we found Malama ..... and what a find it was too. Our safari guide invited us to make the effort to go down there. It is usually a 2 hour drive but we took much longer because that was one of the best things about going down there.
You drive through huge cathedral mopane forests with some of the biggest baobabs you will see. Turn off the main road and find gems of lakes along the way, not to mention a good game viewing drive all wrapped in one. A visit to the nearby hot springs is also a must and excellent for game viewing.
Malama itself feels like home with the owner becoming your friend over sundowners on the veranda while the staff prepared us a really excellent Zambian feast on the fire!
The cottages themselves are well spaced for privacy and face onto the Luangwa river which is a constant panorama of changing game, the large resident hippo pod is always in evidence with their antics.
We loved the fact that the cottages are so open to nature with only gauze windows to let in the breeze and the beautiful view. The whole camp runs on solar and is very low impact. Hot water is supplied via a wood fired 'donkey', the self catering kitchen is very well stocked and use of the deep freezer is available too.
It is only a short distance to the southern entrance of the South Luangwa game reserve but really, you can find more game just around the camp itself.
I would highly recommend this camp for the 4x4 enthusiast. Take the 'short cut' from Petauke which is only 130km but will take you around 5 hours. A real 4-wheel drive adventure trip with lots of rural villages along the way! You will not be sorry if that is your what you are looking for.
A visit to meet HRH Chief Malama at his palace in the nearby village is also recommended with its little Catholic church, school and clinic.
All in all we loved the beautifully fitted cottages and the location. This destination will most definitely be featuring in our new safari offerings.
Away from the busy and touristic area of the South Luangwa National Park, Malama is a real nest in the African bush. Stunning views of the river, wildlife, brand new beautiful chalet and facilities. Everything there is genuine and real. No one else in this area offers this. You feel like there is only you......and there is!
A safari should be about Africa only. This is what Malama is about.
