KaingU is set in a stunning location, on a section of the Kafue river which is filled with large granite boulders, forming numerous islands, small channels and sections of rapids. We camped there for two nights, and went out on a boat trip during the one full day that we were there, seeing numerous hippos, a few elephant and, in the distance (fortunately!) some crocs, along with lots of fascinating birds. There are also a lot of antelope (mainly bush buck and puku) in the region, along with baboons. However, not only is the location great, but KaingU also boasts by far and away the best facilities of any of the campsites that we found during our 10 day self drive safari in the Kafue National Park, with hot water, a fantastic outdoor shower, a sink and a flushing toilet. Its other great asset is its manager, Egbert, who welcomed us like family while we were there (despite us only paying camping rates) and made an already pleasant stay into a really memorable experience.

In this lodge you get the feeling that you are really in Africa. No fences, no fraffic jam near a spotted lion, no overcrowded dining tent but staying in this place means exploring Africa with excellent guides who really enjoy beiing with you.
The lodge is built on the bank along the stunning Kafue river with the Kafue NP at the bank on the other side.
Walking safari, river safari ( by canoe or in a small motorboat), fishing safari or game drive what ever you wish ...it''s possible.
We have been on safari in almost every country in the middle and south of Africa and we have been in a lot of lodges, but there was no place where we felt so at ease as in this place.
Everyone is doing its best to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Iff you want to see four lions, two leopards, ten elephants, five different types of antilopes in one day don't go to this place. If you want to track a lion, or if you want to look for elephants
than this is the place to be.

A stay at KaingU is very different from a stay at a typical big game safari lodge. You may see elephants near the camp and you'll certainly see vervet monkeys, baboons, bushbuck and impala, but the lodge is in a Game Management Area across the Kafue River from Kafue NP, where limited hunting is permitted (and sadly, poaching has been hard to control). Therefore most mammals are wary of humans and stay away. However, there are a number of reasons why this is a delightful place to stay:
- this is one of the most beautiful places we've ever stayed, on a spectacular stretch of the Kafue River. And although Kafue NP has plenty of tse flies, they are not in evidence at the lodge.
- the birding is great - we saw Pels Fishing Owl, African finfoot, Bohm's beeeater, racket tailed roller, Paradise Flycatcher and many other beautiful species
- the fishing is great also - on our first 2 casts we got a pike and a yellow bellied bream
- the staff are lovely

One caveat: KaingU is owner managed, and the routine is very relaxed. The primary activities are boating on the river and guided bush walks in the vicinity of the lodge, along with sundowners in amazingly beautiful spots. Birding and fishing are on offer, and our guide, Andrew, was expert in both. You will need to speak up about what you want to do each day or you may find yourself with more time to relax than you bargained for, since the owner, Tom, is involved in several conservation and development activities in the area and may second the guides to those activities too if you haven't already stated your preferences. Tom and his wife Vivian and manager Ekbert and guide Andrew are very hospitable people and you'll find the conversation around the fire pit at dinner time most interesting - you will learn a lot about southern Africa and the bush.

- the tent accommodations are very well appointed and comfortable, and each tent has a deck overlooking the river.

It has been an amazing trip. We were here for 3 days & nights.
Activities were varied and very interesting. Both guides were excellent. There is nothing to tell... I think I will remember these days forever.
I hope I will come back soon

Travelling from Mumbwa take the GMA road which is recently been upgraded. The KaingU lodge is clearly signposted and the private road is excellent. The lodge manager welcomes us with some cold drinks in the restaurant which is overlooking the rapids. The 2 campsites are perfect. The're grassy sides with perfect ablution blocks and hot water the whole day. The bushbucks daily come by. The're is a lovely walk to the rapids, climbing over the numerous rocks. The river is dotted with numerous granite rocks
This huge granite boulders, created many large and small streams in the river. We have made a trip in a small dinghy (four persons maximum). We were very impressed by the overwhelming nature! Many birds, including rare finfoot and Pel's fishing owl. Crystal clear water with some scattered hippos. We have lunch with a delicious freshly caught fish, locally prepared by Egbert, the Dutch lodge manager.
KaingU lodge is an absolute must, a paradise in the middle of no where!

Camping at KaingU is superb. We had a private placement beside the river ,with fantastic views. Our own loo ,shower & basin in a spacious thatched rondavel , constant hot water. Used the hot water boiler to bake our bread. ! Egbert was a considerate and charming host/guide. Elephants, crocs , hippos, Kudu and more. Great birding, and the highlight was a close encounter with a leopard on our journey out of the G.M.A. We would highly recommend that you visit.
