We spent 3 nights at Mukambi Lodge in August this year and thought all the time of extending our stay, cutting the rest of our trip. We had no reservation, simply showed up and got -at a reasonable price- one of the new permanent tents upriver: huge, very cozy and nicely decorated, fantastic huge bed, magnificent private wood-deck with view over the shore of the river. We felt very comfortable here. Hot water from wood-stove nearby, working very well.

The food was very good, varied and very tasty. The service, in the restaurant and in general, simply overwhelming.

Animals cross the lodge at night, from the bed you hear hyena and lion… We were self driving, but did also some game drivings with their fleet, across the river by boat (thus they save a long and boring drive over the bridge, 10 km away). Quality game-drivings in open vehicles and with professional driver and guide, max. 6 persons per vehicle, so that everyone has a good sight. The afternoon drivings ending up at 7,30 pm, thus becoming night-drivings too, with spotlight on the vehicles, where we saw the local leopards every night. All in all there are not many ways for game drivings in the area, they are very repetitive and the bush is burnt in many places around (like everywhere in Zambia by the way). Animals are not abundant and trend to be elusive in this area, but still, we saw lion and leopard daily. This central part of Kafue can be used as entrance to the N.P., on the way either North to Busanga Plains or to the South of the park. I would recommend a stay of a few days at Mukambi in any way.

Room Tip: The permanent tents upriver are brand new and very atractive, but the traditional chalets are closer...

Hi There

Thank you for your review! We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your holiday. We have recently started putting a camera trap out in the evenings and it is fascinating to see "what goes bump in the night". A couple of nights ago a cheeky hyena decided it tasted good! The good news is the camera survived! Please visit our Facebook page to see pictures of what we are seeing.
Looking forward to hosting you again in the future!

We spent 2 nights at Mukambi recently and had a brilliant time.

We stayed in the tented chalets which were great - a lovely location overlooking the river and the beds were very comfortable!

The food was fantastic, well varied and our last night we had a lovely braai where the tables were set up by the poolside.

The guides were all very knowledgable, friendly and were generally good fun to be around! Newton, Hastings, and Frazer along with the other guides really added to the experience of the game drives and cruise.

Linda, Jacques, Heather and the management team were very pleasant, extremely helpful, and were happy to help with anything we needed.

Overall, a fantastic lodge where you can really experience the African bush in a true sense, and I would highly recommend Mukambi to anyone visiting Zambia.

We'll be back soon!

my daughter and spend 5 nights at of Mukambi Safari Lodge and the Busanga Planes Lodge. The staff was very friendly and was very resposnive to our needs and questions. We stayed 2 nights in Mukambi and 3 nights in the Busanga Lodge. The deluxe tents in Mukambi and the tents in Busanga were very comfortable. Especially the wooden deck at the Mukambi tent with the bathtub was fun. During the game drives the rangers worked hard to find game and especially in busange we say a lot of lions and had the lions, Elephants and Hypos visiting our 4 tent camp on the Busanga Planes. The food was good considering the the distance away from large cities. Overall we had a great experience. especially Caz the host in Busanga made our stay very pleasant as well as all the other staff as well.
they also helped us organizing our flights and stays in Lusaka and Livingstone which was a great relieve.

Room Tip: The deluxe tents were great and very complete and the deck looking over the river was fantastic

Mukambi seem to have long history on Kafue River the camp and was very pleasant stay for us all say for us welcoming and well run camp we had mixed accommodation with group from round hit like structures to some new tented rooms .. our group stayed in both options and very good but if you want luxury stay then the tents are a must !!! Food was excellent and managers we excellent and prompt with our every need ...the camp is very well situated as well to get into park ... sightseeing tours on river , game driving and fishing all possible as activities

Room Tip: Best accommodation is in new luxury Tents .

I had no idea what to expect as our transport bounced southward down a dusty road. When we walked through the entrance of the lodge I knew we had arrived at a wonderful location. Our group of students and I headed at once to the upper deck overlooking the Kafue River with cold beers from the bar to await lunch. During lunch a full grown hippo sauntered into the lobby and laid down upon the flagstones. It was beginning to become interesting.

Each meal was excellent. Our accommodations were excellent -- I stayed in a beautiful one-room grass thatched roof bungalow. It was a bit chilly at night (10C). Returning from an evening safari and meal I found the mosquito netting around the bed deployed and a hot water bottle wrapped in terry cloth between the sheets. Sounds of hippos and wart hogs munching and the occasional monkey screaming in the trees made for a wonderful sleep (I am not being sarcastic -- it was grand). In the pre-dawn a gentleman knocked on the door to deliver hot water for coffee as we prepared for the early safaris.

Above it all shines the staff. Each and every staff member I met was excellent. From the desk clerks, to the wait staff, to the chefs and the guides. Each made you feel like you were the only person that mattered. I made a point to talk to staff members and ask of their lives and jobs. To a person they were very happy. It shows in their work.

If I ever return to Zambia I will certainly return to Mukambi Lodge.

Room Tip: Not sure how you could beat the little bungalows along the river.

We stayed as part of a family reunion and overall we were disappointed with our choice compared to others we experienced on our trip. The rooms were poorly maintained - cracks in walls, toilets not flushing, only generator power so no hairdrying, and solar heated water so cold showers in the morning and one warm one at night if you were lucky. We generally felt mislead by the images on their website as most of the bungalows are NOT on the water with a view and when I asked twice if we could move to the luxury tents that were and not all occupied, they never bothered to even get back to me. The kids enjoyed the pool and the staff who did the game drives and sunset cruises were good but the management I found had a "could not be bothered attitude" when asked for anything extra. Definitely not worth the price you pay for what you get from this one.

Our sincerest apologies for taking so long to respond to your posting!

Many thanks for your kind words regarding our staff and facilities. We pride ourselves in achieving the highest standard of service possible at all times and constantly look for opportunities to exceed expectations!

We remember your group well and had many happy dealing with Mandy during your stay who was your group leader. She did point out the chalets were not on the river but all our chalets have river views. Sadly, hairdryers are not feasible as we run on solar for much of the day as we don't have municipal power due to our remote location. You will be glad to note that we have since replaced all our solar geysers with state of the art gas geysers and given the chalets a make over!

We also mentioned to Mandy that the new safari tents (these are part of our on going plan to rebuild our current chalets) were all fully booked most of the dates you stayed with us. We would have been delighted to upgrade you had the opportunity arisen! We don't charge higher rates for the tents and they are very popular

We look forward to welcoming you in the future

Warm Regards
The Mukambi Team

We were only able to spend a day at the lodge but it was well worth the effort. We couldn't go on the walking safaris because the grass was too high but we went on two drives and saw a great variety of animals. Guides very knowledgeable. Cool thing was the lodge runs a local school for their staff members' children (and others).
Food was phenomenal. I am vegetarian and there was no lack of interesting, well prepared dishes for me to enjoy.
Took a private car to the lodge from Lusaka. Would probably try one of the long distance busses next time.
