“Stunning Shumba!”
Reviewed July 24, 2011

This is a camp in the wild and remote Busanga Plains owned by Wilderness Safaris. The location is amazing - in the heart of a seasonal flood plain. We visited in July when it was a good balance of driving and boating - stunning birdlife and amazing Lion sightings. The camp had it all - great game, super guides and staff and a genuine luxury feel while not being over the top or pretentious. There are three camps in the area operated by Wilderness, we also stayed in Kapinga but Trip Advisor doesn't have it listed yet - why!!!
In short we give it 5 stars and recommend it completely!

Room Tip: all rooms have stunning views, room 1 is a family room

I spent two nights at this fantastic lodge last month as part of a whirlwind trip to Zambia.

Apart from the fantastic game viewing and birdlife (despite going very early in the season), the staff and guides at this camp are some of the friendliest and most attentive people I have ever met. The attention to detail is second to none and all of the guests were made to feel as though the lodge was there home away from home.

My guide Lex deserves a special mention for his wealth of knowledge and passion for guiding.

On a side note, the lodge boasts the best outdoor showers! With endless views over the Busanga Plains it just doesn't get any better than this!

This camp is a real gem in the crown of the Kafue National Park.

Room Tip: Views from each an every room are phenomenal!

This camp has 360 degree views of the Busanga Plains and distant tree lines, my room (indeed each room) has a expansive view of the plains and estuaries running in and around camp. With over 4 prides of lion in the area, often wondering freely through the camp (which is thankfully elevated 3 metres above the ground), this is a treat for the safari connoissseur and new traveller alike. With activities such as hot air ballooning, helicopter flights, game drives and a lovely plunge pool to cool down in, you are never short of varied experiences. The game is specialised and plentiful, Red Lechwe and Puku surrounding the camp at all times and bountiful plains game and cats.. this unique and well appointed, private, dedicated luxury accommodation is rated as my favourite in Zambia!
The staff and chefs are all locally trained from the surrounding villages.. the food would do any 5 star hotel justice - a wonderful variety of traditional and international fare and the ability to cater to dietary requirements with no mess and no fuss - what a splendid camp away from the madding crowd.

Shumba is a very nice premier Wilderness Camp in the Busanga Plains near Kafue National Park in Zambia. First the camp, Shumba is a "tented" camp, with square shoebox style tents on raised platforms. These tents are extreme luxurious, with everything in it what you should want. The only thing missing is a bath-tub, but that is compensated by a huge outdoor shower. The camp has 6 tents and everything is connected with the mainbuilding by elevated walksways. The service is, Wilderness style, great, food nice, nice management couple and a lot of attention for detail. The camp has a pool and a beautiful fire deck.
As said the camp is in the Busanga plains. As these are 6 months per year completely flooded the camp is only open from May till end of November. Don't think it is easy acces during these months... we had to flew from Lusake to the Busange airstrip, but then a helicopterride (allways spectucalar and a nice way to approach a camp) was needed.
The Busanga Plains have some very special game with big herds of red lechwe, roans, hornbills etc. Something different than the usual species. The landscape reminds to the Okavanga, but end september, misses the water. We had very good gamedrives with apart from the plainsgame, everyday sightings of lion and buffalo, one days also leopard.
The only thing that was a little pity was that we were the only guests in camp. Sometimes that is special, but we would have loved some more people (guests) around us. But for everyone visiting Shumba; given its location, limited access and limeted opening time; it is a privilige if you can visit this place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Seasonal camp running 01 June - 01 November. Shumba means ‘lion’ – an appropriate name for a camp located in the midst of several lion pride territories. Indeed, the felines are known for their tree-climbing abilities, and prey on the plethora of herbivores that frequent the Busanga Plains on which Shumba is situated. From the raised decks, the view is panoramic and often filled with grazing puku and lechwe; floodplain grasses stretch to the horizon, interrupted only by isolated protrusions of fig and palm trees. Finally, there is no better vantage point from which to absorb the Plains’ vast remoteness than from a hot air balloon. • 6 tents (1 family) • game drives • seasonal boating • hot air ballooning ... more   less
