“An real oasis”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

Very nice but basic campsite. Don't expect comfort here, come for the experience.
We'd been told we didn't need reservations, upon arrival we were told we should have reserved a campsite. The very friendly ranger didn't mind letting us in anyway though, and we were very happy he did!

Service
The friendliest ranger we met on our trip through Namibia. The only one who actually gave us tips on what to do where and how to behave. He even offered us a free map of the area. This type of treatment was rare at other similar campsites in Namibia unfortunately. Firewood was available for purchase at reasonable prices. The shop really just had the essentials (basically water and softdrinks), make sure you bring food.

Value
Same price as everywhere else, less was honestly offered for the price though. No electricity and very basic washing facilities i.e. The location did make up for it a bit, but it'd lying calling it the deal of the century. Absolute value for europeans is great, relative value compared to other campsites in Namibia was average.

Sleep Quality
Well I won't comment on the beds as you bring your own - our roof tent matress was great. The campsite was one of the more quiet camping grounds. Really small so no big overlanders with noisy groups. Wildlife is rather quiet (more birds than lions and hippos). The flowing water is also very soothing. We slept great!

Cleanliness
Nice clean bathrooms and showers. No electricity so bring a torch. Very attentive rangers keep the grounds clean. Leave it that way and leave no food lying around (wildlife/monkey magnets).

Location
The best part! This is really an oasis compared to other places in southern and mid Namibia. Really lush green landscape with plenty of birds and small wildlife. One of the few places where long hikes in the wild are possible in Namibia -without the fear of being attacked by lions or other large predators. We did however learn that there are Leopards in the area. These usually to stay clear of humans though. There are a few natural pools to skinnydip (beware of other hikers) and cool down on hot days. Really awesome experience and worth the whole trip to this area.

Summary:
Great place, very diffenent to other places in Namibia. Stay 2 nights so you have time for a longer hike. Setup your campsite down by the river and just enjoy.

Room Tip: The campsites down by the water are really nice and might attract wildlife to watch at night/evening...

Really in the nature, very basic. No electricity in the showers, but hey, your in the middle of nature. Nice hiking in the area though be aware that signs are not that clear, so take a lot of extra time for your hike cause you might wind up losing a lot of time finding out where the heck the path went.

Also, beware of the wildlife when your cooking at night or away during the day. Baboons can be a nuisance.

We stayed at this campsite for a couple of nights while on an expedition with World Challenge Expeditions. It's an ideal base for some really nice treks, or just a good place to pit-stop while travelling a great distance.

The campsite is divided into different areas so if there are several groups there it should be possible to find a secluded area for just your group should you wish too.

There is plenty of wildlife around the campsite. As soon as we arrived there were birds coming down wanting to interact with us and be fed - which we were more than happy to do. There was also a family of baboons in the area although be warned they can be quite persistent - they broke into our truck, stole some of our supplies and went running up a mountain with them resulting in a few of us having to give chase. One night I also saw a leopard walk past our tent which was kinda cool.

Overall though the campsite is a friendly, well managed and well presented place that is ideal while trekking the Olive and Waterkloof trails (aka Naukluft Day Treks).

  • Liked — A great location to do trekking
  • Disliked — A bit of a distance to travel to get supplies if you needed them
