Twyfelfontein Country Lodge
Reviewed September 5, 2013

The location is simply amazing, as the lodge is totally built on and inside a rock formation! You can touch and walk on the bare rocks where the floor is missing somewhere in the main lodge area, as well as the pool that lies just above the rocks.
The sunset from the main porch is simply stunning, and if you're lucky you'll see some elephants come to have some water in the waterhole nearby.
The only point is the simply decorated bedrooms, which style is quite different from the stylish and relaxed atmosphere you can experience in the main hall area, but never mind, the room are quite good and clean, spacious and easily reachable form the lodge. The dinner served in the upper porch offers a great variety of game, meat, vegetables and a lot more. Worth a visit.

Room Tip: Be sure to pack you own hairdryer!

We only relaxed and had coffee at the Lodge so can't rate it - but the service and staff were nice. The safari run for the desert elephants is fantastic - we saw a baby less than 24 hours old! You also get to see some antelope species, rock hyrax and great flora - knowledgeable and fun guides.

If you compare with other lodges in Namibia and in the Damaraland area (see my review about Camp Kipwe, which stands 12 kilometers away from TCL) you will be very disappointed.

The lodge is well situated but it's too big (around sixty rooms as the others get 10) : the consequences are that the staff is not very helpfull, not friendly in general ; the food (buffet in the evening) is quite ordinary, the eating room noisy.

The rooms are clean, big enough, not much decorated.

The positive point was the game drive : it's worth it to see elephants in the late afternoon and the guide was nice (infortunately the truck is noisy so it's a bit difficult to talk to him).

Last point : it's obviously cheaper than Camp Kipwe and Mowani, so you'll maybe have to make a choice...Beware : as the other lodges are much more little you have too book a long time in advance, otherwise you'll be obliged to stay here.

Thank you very much for your review! One cannot compare Camp Kipwe and Mowani Mountain Camp with TCL. Both Kipwe and Mowani are Luxury Camping accommodation for the Up market traveller. Therefore their rates are more expensive. Twyfelfontein Country Lodge does have a Luxury sweet and is available to travellers on special request. Twyfelfontein Country Lodge offer affordable prices and value for money to all our travellers. We are constantly trying to improve our service by organizing training sessions for our staff. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future!

My parents and I stayed here for one night. We liked the lodge but felt that it was lacking same character that other lodges on our trip had. The food was fine, no complaints, just the rooms were on the more basic side. However, the region is very pretty but unless you are really into seeing the engravings there is no real need to stay here. I would've preferred to stay at our next lodge (Vingerklip) and then drive the 2 hours to see the engravings if I really wanted to....

We spent two nights there. Accommodation is alright, its not spacious but it was clean. On our first night the food was very poor but there was a noticeable improvement for our second day. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We visited the world heritage site and was surprised that the bushmans paintings were not protected. We enjoyed the evening game drive and sundowner.

Twyfelfontein is near historical sites that make the mind boggle with the age that the San people have lived. Near the only World heritage site in Namibia, Twyfelfontein takes you back to the ancient past when motor vehicles did not exist but nature had an enduring way of allowing people to survive live and enjoy the solitude that was their privilege.
Do not miss the Burnt Mountain in the early morning the change of colors is dramatic, the San Engravings are incredibly interesting and the level of teaching for future generations of the San in incredible.
See the petrified trees of millions of years ago.
Sunsets are magnificent and the added attraction of possibly seeing the scarce Desert Elephants on a game drive is stunning when you are lucky enough to find these animals that live in this vast desert area.
The accommodation is basic, neat and clean.
The service from the staff was commendable and they tried to satisfy the requests to the best of their ability.
For the lodge to be so far from amenities the food produced was exceptional.
Evening song and dance from the staff was enjoyed by all staying over.

Do not do one day only spend two nights so that you can enjoy the history of the area and talk and wonder how these San lived their lives.

It is the second time I'm visiting Namibia. We stayed 1 night in this over estimated Lodge. Too expensive for the empty buffets !!! While my friend went to reception to pay, I went to toilet and when I came back 200 euro that I just put in my wallet were stolen out of my bag from one of the many ladies hanging around the rooms.

Dear Annemie
It is sad to read such a negative review on Twyfelfontein Country Lodge after it has received more than a handful of positive reviews for the month of July. We take both negative and positive criticism very seriously and continually strive to improve our product and service.
We have investigated your alleged accusations regarding empty buffet and theft. Restaurant time is from 18h30 till 21h00 for Dinner and 06h30 till 09h00 for Breakfast. We have found that there was no problem with the variety or with the amount to select from. No complaints had been received from other guest.
Theft is a very serious crime. It is sad that you did not report it at reception or to the Lodge Management. The Housekeeping team only arrives at 8 o’clock in the mornings since first of July 2013. We can assure you that not one single person had entered your room while it was still vacated by you and whiles you been in the bathroom/toilet.
We thank you for taking time to review Twyfelfontein Country Lodge.
