My friend and I had the pleasure of staying at Kipwe for two nights during a recent tour of Namibia. The landscape is incredible; nestled between giant boulders in an area that seems as if it's on another planet. The staff was extremely friendly, the service attentive and the food good. We enjoyed the activities with our guide, Taffy, especially the drive to view the desert elephants.

Kipwe is stunning and was an excellent stop in our tour of amazing Namibia.

Where is Camp Kipwe? This becomes a legitimate question once you realise how
well the lodge seamlessly blends with its surroundings of huge orange
boulders. The room was spacious and simply designed, which accentuated the
overall harmonious feeling of being (comfortably) in the middle of the
desert. The outside bathroom was surreal and taking a shower with that
desert night sky was magic. One has to add that the evenings in September
were quite chilly, so for a longer shower one might choose to take it during
the warmth of the day :-).

We were happy with the food and service. They even complimentary washed our
car, which was the only place to do that during our 2 week trip in Namibia
(or ever anywhere).

On the afternoon we arrived we did the trip to Twyfelfountein rock
engravings, organ pipes and burnt mountain visit. There 'touristic interest'
is pretty much in that order. On the way back to the lodge our guide took a
small detour and we even saw the desert adapted elephants. Apparently they
passed the lodge just before we arrived in the lodge.

We stayed only one night at Camp Kipwe. I wish we had stayed one more to
have more time to enjoy this unique place.

When we left, we stopped at Damara living village nearby, which was very
worth the visit.

Due to availability, we stayed for one night at both Mowani and Camp Kipwe. Although this wasn’t what we originally wanted, it did give us the opportunity to see and compare both camps.
Camp Kipwe is located more in a valley than Mowani so it doesn’t have quite as spectacular scenery, although it is still spectacular. It was also completely rebuilt in 2011/12, we understand, owing to a fire, so they consider themselves to be a new camp and ask for feedback so they can improve.
The rooms are solid structures rather than the canvas walled accommodation at Mowani, but Kipwe has the advantage of having completely outdoor bathrooms which are stunning, although this did give us the rather unusual problem of finding the toilet seat too hot to sit on because the sun had been shining on it all day.
The rooms themselves have, I feel, been a little poorly designed though because it was like living inside an oven – even with air con, we couldn’t get the room lower than 28C all night.
The food here was good – some might find it a little plain but it was perfectly adequate. The restaurant service is more laid back here and some of the staff are still learning and don’t always appear to know what they are doing. We quite liked their relaxed nature and enjoyed chatting to them. Other guests were clearly not so impressed.
Kipwe also has a sundowner spot, which whilst not quite as spectacular as Mowani, is still very nice indeed. One thing to watch though is that the sundowner spot has many steps and a bit of clambering and there is no lighting, nor are torches provided, so don’t get stuck up the top without one.
So overall, not quite as good as Mowani, but not far away, and it’s worth noting that the general atmosphere amongst the clientele at Kipwe is a lot more relaxed and we actually preferred that.

We were really amazed how somebody can think of creating something like this that totally fits into the surroundings!! And also the inner decorations, from each chalet, from the lounge, from the restaurant, from the swimming pool, the open air bathrooms, the public toilets near the restaurant........just stunning!!
Just imagine taking a shower while looking at the stars!!!
Ant the donkey-heating as they call it, the oven outside the bathroom that heats the water, very eco-friendly, while the water is actually always piping hot!
Location is also stunning.
The game ride for tracing the dessert elephants is absolutely marvelous!! Our guide found them after a two hours ride, some 25 or 30 of them, and he knew always exactly what they wanted to do. marvelous.
Staff in the restaurant could be better trained, some of them, but overall they were friendly, willing, and very, very helpful.

Room Tip: We had chalet nr. 1, which had a wonderful view of the dessert and sunset.

During our trip through Namibia we had the pleasure to stay for one night at Camp Kipwe (however one night is way too short). It's a fantastic place. The camp is integrated into the natural rocks of a small hill. All chalets have a round layout with outdoor bathrooms (what a wonderful experience it is to have an outdoor shower after a very sandy day out in the desert!!!!) and air condition. Every evening and morning a hot water boiler is heated with wooden fire - the smell of it makes the experience even better. The rooms are really big, unfortunately no fridge inside. But the most important about all is the view from the terraces into the desert. If you're lucky you might even see some of the famous desert elephants. We did not, but the view is stunning even without elephants. The restaurant delivers real good quality food and as at every lodge there is also a very good selection of south african wines.
The staff is superfriendly and helpful. As extra service they even cleaned the car in the morning!
The location itself is very close to the famous Twyfelfontein rock engravings. It's approx. a 30 minutes drive away. Additionally you can also visit the burned mountain and organ pipes easily (next to Twyfelfontein).
Whenever I will come back to Namibia this lodge will be on the list of my destinations and I will for sure stay longer than one night.

Camp Kipwe was beautiful and the setting was perfect, but I would not stay here again. There was so much pressure to do an elephant drive or have a guided tour of Twyfelfontien and we were not interested in either having just recently gone on a desert adapted elephant tour at Grootberg which was fabulous and seen Twyfelfontein. The showers and toilets were attached to the individual chalets, but were outside. The open design didn't offer much privacy. I could make eye contact from the bathroom with people in the parking area and at the lodge. I also had to stoop in the shower. At least I had a hot shower though. There was no hot water when my husband got into the shower. I have traveled quite a bit in Namibia in a variety of accommodations from camping to high end and never experienced this before. I did not take a long shower. As soon as we declined the tours we felt the attitude towards us changed and customer service declined markedly. It was conveniently located to Brandberg and I'd highly recommend anyone traveling to Damaraland visit Brandberg.

Camp Kipwe was one of the anticipated highlights of our holiday - booked by Imagine Africa, we were really looking forward to the experience and it didn't disappoint... In the most amazing setting it is luxury on a scale you wouldn't expect in such a remote place. The individual lodges with their outside bathrooms are wonderful - lizards, geckos and a dusky sunbirds to name a few... The staff were very attentive and friendly but sadly we were only there for one night, so it was no more than an overnight stop but would return again. We did not get to see desert elephants here, but our next stop at Entendeka was absolutely brilliant and a bit closer to nature.

Room Tip: Our room (1) overlooked the car parking which may not be everyone's first choice, but the views...
