I have to say that the most memorable part of my stay here was that it is the only place in the world that was "out of stock" , of any type of Cola.......even as we travelled the central flood plains of Mozambique we found Cola at every little village we came across…..not here!
Let’s start with “reservations”…..having used Trip Advisor to find a beach resort we were delighted that they had availability for the 4 of us travelling. We booked and tried to pay a deposit but were told by email this was not necessary. The day prior to our arrival we tried to contact the lodge to confirm we were incoming, the day we set off on a challenging 16 hours across unmarked roads we tried to call them in the morning and several times when signal permitted during the day, to again confirm our arrival – not once was the phone answered, as intrepid adventurers we pressed on!
We reached Vilanculos just before 9pm, very tired and looking forward to our digs for the next 3 days. Let me say this……if you don’t have a 4 wheel drive , you will NEVER make it here, the last 4 miles to the resort was as bad, if not worse than the interior of the country (which had no marked roads).
On arrival, they had no idea who we were……..the owner a charming Portuguese lady eventually appeared and apologised to us for having given our rooms away….. myself and James ( a good friend) shared a double bed that night (we are closer now than we ever wanted to be) and my other two friends shared a twin – these things happen I guess….
For the record the location, beech, rooms and general ambience of the place are great……the attention to detail and service at times was maddening!
Having discovered the lack of coke of any description, as well as the lack of tonic we presumed this was the African way and stayed pretty calm, they assured us the situation with the accommodation and the drinks would be rectified in the AM and offered us a round of free beer….(something at least!)
In the morning we requested they clean out our chariot, including two cooler boxes and return one of them with ice to our room as we had some “special drinks” we travelled with …..Hendrix Gin, Tonic, Cucumber , a magnum of vintage Dom………the cooler box stood for several hours largely ignored by the staff and requesting ice became a joke, both for the cooler box and drinks that they served….
We also noticed there was a reluctance for staff to bring salt and pepper to the table, this happened every day, at every meal, it was because there was only one set for the entire place! By day three we would go fetch it ourselves, frustrated by the fact that when they did bring it to the table they would bring the salt and not the pepper or vice versa….bizarre….
The biscuit for me was when the new manager Xavier appeared and introduced himself. Whilst welcoming and friendly he clearly had something on his mind……he pointed out that we would not get ice for our cooler box as this was a “hotel” and that they had a bar and restaurant and didn’t want guests drinking in their rooms…………..I pointed out that the “drink” was Dom Perignon, Hendrix Gin and a Magnum of fine red wine, and as he didn’t even have coca-cola what were the chances of getting any of the above for sunset? The ice eventually arrived……

Another new member of staff, recently arrived from Lisbon was the chef, his food was excellent but the choice was limited, again largely down to the fact he, like Xavier the manager was getting his “feet under the table”. Food was good though!
I hope they get their act together as it’s a nice spot and not bad value , you have to really want to go there and really want to get in touch with them to actually make a reservation !
Xavier recommended we try the Cabana restaurant on the beech in Vilanculos and they showed that service from a well stocked bar with cracking food (including relevant condements) is available in Mozambique – Not sure if it was training, language or a combination of the above at Villas Dos Indicos but the poor service was other wordly!
We flew off to Bazaruti Island , stayed at Indigo Bay (not a fair comparison, so I’ll review that separately), on our return through Vilanculos 3 days later we attempted to get in touch to enquire about a garment that was left in one of the rooms……again no response on the phone! We drove a round trip of an hour to fetch the garment….which was “Not found”, disappointing as it’s a small resort with a handful of staff and few guests…….
I am sure there are better places to stay for the money……..

Room Tip: The sea facing bungalows with twon beds are clean and smart....

I stayed at Villas do Indico, for 2 nights, from the 14th to the 16th of September. I must say, that I entered as a client and left as a friend, The location is stunning beautiful, the ambiance is really pleasant, rooms are very comfortable and well decorated.
Service is so personal, you feel yourself at home; food is delicious, with high standards of quality and food safety.
Above all this you get a good value for money.
I recommend this lodge when in Vilankulos, wether in holidays, work, passing by, etc.

Room Tip: All rooms are well located, facing the beach and are super comfortable.

We stayed at Villas do Indico for 3 nights and we loved it! It is good value for money. First and foremost because of the service. Benny was an awesome guide for the ocean trip to the 3 miles reef and the sanddunes. Furthermore, the speed and efficiency in which the stay and trip got organized by the management was much appreciated. The place in itself is very nicely located a bit isolated away from Vilanculos (6 km drive and you need a 4 wheeler), but far away from all the hussle and right at a beautiful beach and the amazing ocean. The rooms are very comfortable with very nice big bathrooms and big patios. Paolo the manager was very hospital and a good chef too.

Our stay at Villas do Indico was just perfect. We first stayed 1 night (on our way to Gorongosa) at the 4x4 campsite, which was one of the nicest we have seen on our trip through Mozambique. The shower blocks are really quite luxurious and spacious. Real value for money.

After Gorongosa we planned to return to Villas do Indico to stay a few more nights in one of the sea front bungalows. We ended up staying for 5 nights because we loved it so much. During the day we divided our time between spectacular diving in the Archipelago and relaxing around the beach, pool and the lovely veranda of our bungalow. We have been travelling in low season and it hasn't been very busy in most of the places we've stayed, but during dinner time at Villa's do Indico it was always cosy and nicely crowded, with a fire outside and a great vibe in general.

We had great sea food every night, prepared by the manager/chef Paulo (especially the squid we just loved!) with lovely Portugese wines. The owner Oscar and not to forget Paula and Melissa were also extremely welcoming and helpful. They told us that their aim is for people to arrive as guests and leave as friends, and that is just how we felt.

We definitely hope to return one day. Very warmly recommended!

We stayed here in late May, we had a very spoiling and relaxing 3 day stay (far too short) , having discovered the accommodation by chance through our booking for Sailaway dhow safaris (this is one of their accommodation options)
The Manager / Chef Paulo and his wife Melissa were delightful and welcoming, we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay , definitely the best appointed and most comfortable accommodation in our 4 week trip to Mozambique.
The rooms themselves ,are not styled externally with much Mozambique character, but this is more than made up for by a high level of appointment inside , bathroom and bedroom – a touch of discerning and furnished with excellent taste (and one of the most comfortable huge beds we have slept in we almost overslept every breakfast!)
The accommodation is very reasonably priced
The restaurant is open air and similarly stylish, the menu is quite exceptional for Mozambique, ( a bit more costly than most , but the quality and combinations of Portuguese/Mozambique and Azores was very good and a very interesting dining experience)
Similarly the sparling rim-flow pool with its tasteful loungers around the deck was also great- I think that this would be a great place chill for a week or so (perhaps a second honeymoon!) We were the only visitors at the time and the spa lady was away so did not have the opportunity to enjoy this facility – similarly there is a wide range of activities that Paulo can take you on – on our next visit I will definitely do another snorkelling trip to 2 – mile reef between Marguerite and Bazaruto islands – this is a really exceptional experience .
Access is approx. 10 km out of Vilanculos , the sand is not for the feint hearted – a 4 x 4 IS necessary ( we even managed to get stuck even with our 4x4 low range and difflock! )- just ensure that you maintain sufficient momentum.
A great stay and romantic experience.

Room Tip: A front row room is best (facing the sea)

Villanculos, with it's crystal clear water and gorgeous blue sea, is more than worth a visit, and Villas do Indico is the place to stay when in Villanculos. It's a great hotel on an amazing beach, with superb food, top-notch service and surprisingly affordable prices. The rooms are spacious, with air-con, large comfy beds and practically on the beach. Any minor issues we had were dealt with promptly. The boat trip to the islands is an absolute MUST!! And do walk up the sand dune, even if it feels like you'll never get to the top, the views are worth it! Many thanks to the staff at the hotel for making it a perfect stay, specially Paulo and Melissa. We can't wait to go back!!
