“A good getawy from Maputo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2014

Pestana lodge, compared to other places in Mozambique, is a good value for money. It has ample rooms, friendly staff and comfy beds. One doesn't travel to Inhaca to hang out in a lodge, though. If your expectation is this magical lodge experience, then go to South Africa. If, however, you need a place to crash on a magical island, then this is the place for you.

We went over there to end our holidays in a great way. What a deception.Firs what was sold in the package is not what is offered. There was no recreational activities in our stay. The resort is abandoned and a lot of things do not function as the tennis court . The hotel is old with no investments and rolling apart in all senses. The staff working there were fantastic and try to do miracles with what they have. The rooms are not acceptable for a 4 star resort, with no fridge, old, no complimentary water and problems with hot water. The facilities of reception, dinning room, living room were decrepit. There is no gym (as there was one) and the playing room for kids is abandoned. The food was average for a 3 star hotel and not a resort, despite the fact that we could not eat at dinner, which was included, what we wanted. most of the offers such as sea food was out of our range. It was really a nightmare for a family holiday planned to end with a 6 nights of leisure.

Comfortable rooms with all amenities you would require. Magical island to explore. Not advised to lounge on beach in front of lodge - very dirty and is port of entry to whole island and very busy and unkept - rather hire guide with 4x4 and go to other side of island for snorkeling, swimming etc. Poorly managed, has great potential but no guidance from the top, waiters and porters are the gems of the lodge. Would return but for island not for lodge.

I see reviews that are not very good. I agree that the hotel is not 5 star but I have, for the past 47 odd years, found it quaint and charming. I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful and the locals are a pleasure. It may lack a lot of modern conveniences and comforts but it makes you feel that you are on an island not in a hotel on the mainland. Give it a break and be a bit adventurous

Inhaca is a great island to spend a weekend or a few days - The hotel itself has seen it's best days - and the service is average to poor. The food is bland workshop food, and most of the staff did not strike us as very friendly and welcoming.

The tour operator who organized the hotel for us told us that all non-motorized sports were included in the price - but on arrival, the manager insisted that was not the case. The tour operator confirmed with the Pestana group, but we got no luck with the manager.

Carlos, who's running the snorkeling and scuba diving trips, was very helpful and pleasant. We spent a lovely morning snorkeling at Santa Maria near the main land. And the charm of the village and being able to walk for a kilometer into the sea at low tide (and all those beautiful starfish) really made up for the average hotel experience. From what we gathered, there is no alternative to the pestana, that's what you get with monopolies I suppose.

I agree with other reviews that the hotel facilities are not those of a 4 stars hotel, rather a 3 stars but the service more that makes up for it.

Everybody was very welcoming, helpful and tried to make our stay a fantastic one. We are a family with 4 small children and although the hotel does not have connecting rooms, we got two rooms next to each other, near the reception and swimming pool.

The food was excellent but might get a bit boring after a few days and the bbq at night was amazing. Good meat, good fish, great service, friendly and efficient.

The beach near the hotel was out of this world and only a short 5 minute walk.

We plan to come back at another time to enjoy the activities organised by the hotel such as whale watching and a walk in the village or a trip to the Portuguese Island.

We went to the island as part of a safari package and the web sight of the hotel is vry misleading.
The border crossing was a nightmare 1.45 hours the officails all wanted extra money ect. The hotel was ok not 4-5 stars as suggested. The water is undrinkable but they charge for bottled water? They ran out of food/wine/beer/water on our 3 day. The food that was served was badly done.. 5 noodle dishes one night because they were out of everything else! ( think spagetti everything) Really had a disinterested staff- finally convinced them to go to town and buy wine and beer and water. Very overpriced- really a huge ripe-off for guests...WOULD NEVER GO BACK!!!

Dear guest

Thank you for your comment on the trip adviser regarding your stay at Pestana Inhaca lodge, we really appreciate your valued opinion and concerning the issues that the hotel has responsibility on, we will put in place corrective measures to rectify this.

However I would like to comment of the following:
• The boat transfer from Maputo to Inhaca depends on the kind of boat you’re using – 2h45 min with the government ferry, 2h00 with the Vodacom Ferry, 55 min with the private speed boat
• The officials from the biology station are charging the 200 mts for the conservation fee (maybe is the extra money you referred to)
• The water on the Island is not drinkable, the hotel offer a complementary bottle of water per person on arrival, after that you have to buy your own water.
• You mention that the hotel run out of food/water/wine/beer – unfortunately it wasn’t exactly like that, the food item that we ran out of was ham and butter, and one type of beer (laurentina Clara) which was replaced quickly, I would like to mention that all our purchases are made in Maputo and being in the Island with no alternatives, if some sort of food or beverage stock is finished we have no other alternative than wait until the day we can get a boat, more special on the weekends this turns to be difficult.
• About the prices of our beverages, obviously we cannot compare the prices with the main land as it costs more to do the logistic in this part of the world.

Kind regards
