Pestana Inhaca Lodge

I travelled to Inhaca Island Resort at the end of 2010 with my husband.
After reading some unfavourable reviews, I thought I would give my point of view.

I spent a week in Inhaca and had a lovely holiday. We flew with CFA on a short flight from Maputo in a 5-seater plane - not for the faint hearted. We were welcomed with coconut milk which was a wonderful touch.

The weather was gorgeous for 6 out of the 7 days there.
Lying at the pool is very relaxing, but we spent most days on the Portugese Island, a 5-10 min boat ride away, this service is offered free by the resort. The resort equipped us with cooler boxes filled with cooldrinks & snacks which were great to have on the Portugese Island as there is no shop there. Some days it was just the 2 of us on the island alone which was amazing. Just picture crystal clear blue water and plenty of sunshine.

The staff at the hotel are extremely hard working and really try hard to please you.

I would recommend eating at Lucas as their food is delicious. I dont think you could find more fresh seafood!

Another tip: Dont rely on exchanging cash at the bank there. Rather exchange in Maputo.

Dont expect a 5-star resort and you wont be disappointed.
After a week holiday here, I came home extremely relaxed and refreshed!

Inhaca is a precious almost untouched marine reserve. It's an island 30km from Maputo with two distinct sides, the one turned at the Indian Ocean with sandy beaches, and another turned to the Mainland, which is where Pestana lodge is situated. The lodge itself is rather old, but relatively well maintained. Its probably the fanciest in the island, but way too expensive for what it offers.

You sleep in small chalets that are comfortable and nicely decorated. The food is nice (buffet) but not great as there could be more seafood or fish dishes. The architecture of the main building stands out for being very distinctive and makes a nice visual impact.

The best part of the lodge is the pool area where you can relax under the sun in nice chairs with just palm trees and the ocean with a couple of fishing boats on the horizon. Very relaxing.

There's not much to do in the island, but you can take organized trips to the Lighthouse, tour the island by boat, and you can also dive as there is a diving center in the facilities. Inhaca is one of the best spots in the world for diving, and you can see live coral reefs and tons of sea life. Just outside the perimeter is a small village and every saturday is party night so expect tons of noise and loud music into the night.

- the hotel is fine not outstanding as the location is the worst one previnting the guests to benefit from the beach and the sea, but staff is very friendly and professional, confort and cleaness of the rooms are the key advantage

- the food could be better as there is plenty of fresh fish and seadfood

- the portuguese island trip is good although it will be nice to have some drinks available

- the snorkeling trip is reasonable for beginners but not good for experts

- a trip to the light house and the beach next to it is mandatory - it is the most beautiful place to swim and relax in warm waters - it is easly organized by the hotel activities

I went to Inhaca last year December 2011 to celebrate my birthday, Best decision ever. Its not a five star and don’t expect any five star treatment in Moz but the hospitality is great, the community at inhaca are so friendly and welcoming they make your stay worthwhile. We stayed at the Pestana inhaca got there by the Vodacom ferry was an amazing experience 2hrs on sea but felt like 20min. It was raining when we left Maputo but when we got Inhaca it was soo sunny and great. We only stayed one day but seemed like a week , we made so many friends. The locals at the village night club sang happy birthday in Portugues for me which was lovely. There are two islands that you go to one for snorkeling with beautiful fishes and the Portogues island and fishing. Go there live like the locals and have fun , drinks are cheaper in the village. The hotel is average and they can improve it because their structer is very good but lacks with the decor which is not a huge issue since we spent most of our time outdoors.

We had a relaxing stay at the hotel. Rooms are spacious, nicely decorated and clean. Staff is very nice and helpful. Hotel has a big saltwater pool (no chlorine!). Specifically the excursion organized by Carlos to Portuguese Island and Santa Maria are fantastic. The beach around the hotel is unfortunately full of rubbish and glass and polluted, as the sewerage is pumped right into the sea in front of the hotel. Being pricy and part of a big chain, the Pestana should certainly invest in keeping the beach clean!

We travelled to Inhaca as we were visiting our son who was working in nearby Maputo. We would probably not have chosen it otherwise, but it was convenient. It was as described by our travel agent, Imagine Africa, UK and met our needs.

However - although it was clean, tidy, and did what it said - there was something lacking, which as a family we could not quite identify. The accomodation, although clean and fair quality was dark and of basic design. It reminded us of some of the hotels we have stayed in in Cuba - sound but lacking interest and modern style. Staff were fine, food adequate but not exciting.
Trips as advertised, to diving etc were very expensive. The daily free speed boat to Portguesa Isla is good fun and takes you to white sand and clear sea. The beach by the hotel is a local port - however this is great for people watching - especially from the little bar just up the beach - good value food/ drinks here - also at Lucas Restaurant in village just outside the hotel. The flight we took both ways is very exciting - it was a 4 seater Cessna on the way back - what an experience!!

I could see that you might be disappointed if you had chosen this specifically, but we had a lovely relaxing 5 days and a fun Christmas on the beach so it did us fine.

I tried to book the hotel during the festive season for a romantic getaway and luckily could not get a place to stay. We took a day trip from Maputo to the Island and was dissapointed on arrival. We were stopped at the main gate from entering the property by the gate keeper as, in his words, "we are full" ( keeping in mind we went there for lunch ). From what we saw on the internet, the property was definately not what was advertised. The grass needed serious attention, the pool was dirty and heavily chlorinated. The service at the pool side was poor, the staff we dealt with did not understand English which made communication difficult. There was also no manager is sight to speak to and service in general was dismal. I cannot comment on anything that the rooms had to offer, but first impressions last and I am not sure i would want to visit this hotel. Hopefully there is more to this place that what meets the eye, but our entire party was dissapointed with what we saw.
