Njaya Lodge
Ranked #2 of 2 Nkhata Bay B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 6, 2012

This is an average place in Nkhata Bay. We chose to stay here because they accept credit cards. The view and lake coming right up to the cabin made it. Very beautiful! Food is mediocre. Honestly, we wished we had stayed at Mayoka Village instead.

My wife and I stayed at this place are coming up a dreadful road from Nkhata Bay to feel marooned in the middle of nowhere. Yes you oculd see the lake but you had to negotiate tortuous steps yo get to it. The barman Gilbert is a joke with his pseudo-friendly nonsense. The food on the menu was either off or unavailable. Their website is outdated and shows people we spoke about who are long dead. Our night was spent battling mosquito's and ants. The next morning my wife and I went for breakfast in the bar area and had french toast which was nice, but served by a leering waiter who was an Arsenal supporter so he kept telling us. When my wife went back to our hut she discovered items of costmetics missing and when confronting the manager he smiled and laughed. The also say the accept credit cards that's nonsense as well. Don't come here stay in town there are many other lodges don't be fooled by the pseudo-friendly crap.

NjayaOwner, Owner at Njaya Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded November 2, 2011

As co-owner of Njaya Lodge I want to respond to the review below by a traveller from the South Sudan. We have always encouraged our Malawian staff to mix with guests and chat to them as much as possible (within reason) so that visitors are able to feel integrated into the Malawian community and welcome. 99% of our customers love this attitude and Njaya is renowned for it's wonderful kind staff. In fact it has been quoted as 'one of the friendliest lodges in Malawi'. We are sorry if this person wasn't comfortable with this. Also in Malawi there are food shortages which might explain why some things aren't always available on the menu - again our apologies. Our road...well what can I say. For years we have been trying to get the Government to grade it and every year post rainy season we work on trying to improve it but there are plans to build a new road in the pipeline. I am sorry this person clearly had such a terrible time but perhaps Malawi was not the right country for this couple..it is a developing country in sub-Saharan Africa of outstanding natural beauty but that does come with a few minor issues common to the tropics. We have never had a problem with theft either and take care to make sure our guests are secure and looked after.....Thanks for taking the time to read this..

Not my first stay at Njaya and probably won't be my last.. Great location, my room was almost in the lake, waves lapping on the beach outside, have a look at the photos I've attached.. Really great staff and you'll sleep like a babay!

Returned here after my last stay 10 years ago. It's lost non of the charm it had back then. The location simply beats the pants off anywhere else in nkata bay. The lodge is on a gentle slope down to its on beach (Chikale) with bandas dotted around the mango trees. They have a new beach bar which almost begs you to lie down with a cold beer. Some of the buildings need a bit of updating but the beach bandas which haven't changed and have stunning positions and are definetly my favourite. There is oodles of space at the bar, the dining area and decking and around the grounds so if you want to chill out you don't have to do it rubbing shoulders with everyone else in the place.
The food is hearty and the staff are simply brilliant and are still there from my last visit. They pick you up on arrival also (we arrived at 2am!).It was like returning to see old friends. The whole vibe of the place is chilled out and not contrived. You can get internet using the dongle they have but the place needs a proper set up, coming soon they tell me. The most difficult thing about Njaya is leaving it!
Nearby Myoka is closer to town and the 'travellers choice' but i can't see why. It's a bit like staying on a cliff face and after a couple of beers I was always slightly concerned i'd break my legs walking down the slope to the bar. The staff are a little too "well trained" and the place is really cramped.
Basically i'd say if your unsure where to stay go to Njaya. You won't be dissappointed.

Nice place with attractive rooms spread out in the grounds. Very nice view from bar over the lake. Small beach area nearby. Food is very good. Quiet location about 15mins from town so good place to relax. No Internet though.

We stayed in Njaya lodge as it got such a good review in Lonely Planet. We later found out that someone from Njaya had helped Lonely Planet with their research in Malawi so no wonder the review was so good. I can imagine that this use to be a very nice place. Unfortunately the English owners have moved back to England and the place is now pretty run down and the local management is only interested in selling you their wooden souvenirs or trips to the lake. This is suppose to be a place where you relax so you don’t really want to be hassled by someone trying to sell you something all the time. The lodge is in a wonderful location but the food is well below average and very expensive (almost London prices for the sort of food you get there) It is also a long (and in the evening pretty dangerous) walk to Nkahata Bay village where the better restaurants and bars are located. We didn’t hear good stories about any of the lodges in Nkhata Bay and hence we recommend you to skip Nkhata Bay and go straight to Zulunkhuni river lodge that was truly a wonderful place.

With day beds, sofas and lots of relaxation. The bar serves, cold beers, juices, milkshakes and cocktails, whilst the restaurant serves fantastic, burgers, steaks and fish straight from the lake accompanied by fresh vegetables and salads The terrace overlooks magnificent Lake Malawi stretching across at this widest part, 52 miles to the neigbouring shores of Tanzania and Mozambique. We've built a collection of cottages, chalets and houses spread over lush gardens and terraces that lead down to beautiful Chikale beach, the only beach in Nkhata Bay. There should be something to fit every budget. From comfortable cottages perched over the water, to family houses, and garden chalets all ensuite with four poster beds, fans and views.
