“Inexpensive Paradise”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

It felt like paradise, and I was only paying $8 a night. It was unheard of. The owners are incredibly welcoming, the food is remarkable and the views over Lake Malawi are unlike anything you've seen. They offer a lot of amazing activities. I especially recommend the River Canyoning. Overall, my experience at Zulunkhuni could not have been better.

Nested in a secluded area on the shores of the beautiful Lake Malawi, Zulukhuni is a quiet paradise. The vegetarian restaurant is truly delicious while the staff is friendly and the rooms comfortable! Definitely a place worth going out of your way for! Make sure to plan your trip around getting back; the ferry leaves only on Mondays and Fridays, and is quite an experience in its own right.

Beautiful, secluded and so relaxing! Really friendly and hospitable owners, the perfect place to just go and chill out! A bit of an effort to get out there though, we did a 4 day kayak trip to get there with Monkey Business which I highly recommend and then we took a boat back (the boat leaves twice a week).

This is a jewel of a lodge nestled in the hillside of lake Malawi with stunning views from your chalet. We were a group of 5 pensioners who hired a private water taxi to travel down beautiful Lake Malawi. We were charmed and seduced by the location and British owner Charlie along with his small staff of local residents fed us fabulous vegetarian meals and looked after all our needs including cold beer.If you enjoy swimming and snorkeling the water will always beckon you.We visited a local village where impressive sustainable community projects are in progress due to the influence of Charlie and the maverick British humanitarian,Rose. Even though this is not luxury lodge and traveling there was off the beaten track this unique eco spot was well worth it!

I volunteered in Ruarwe this summer for 3 weeks staying in a dorm at the beautiful Zulunkhuni lodge. Not only was the setting paradisal, but the owners and workers were extremely welcoming and relaxed and made the experience as enjoyable as it was. The food, especially the veggie burgers were delicious with a variety of options for each meal time at a reasonable price.

Had an amazing time, and would definitely recommend.

Having spent 3 weeks volunteering on an university project I would recommend the lodge to anyone. The staff are all so friendly and make you feel completely welcome there.

It's an experience you will not get anywhere else, as I look back at turning up in the pitch black to a welcome of the staff by candle light. The atmosphere set by the paraffin lamps and lack of electricity was truly spectacular. Things do not disappoint by daylight, with brilliant views and surroundings. I spent most of my time working in the nearby village of Ruarwe, where the people were all just as friendly.

However at the weekend the lodge never disappointed in providing entertainment whether you were relaxing at the beach, swimming in the cool fresh water of the lake or taking a trip up the scenic waterfalls, with natural slides and jumps the whole way up. There was also opportunities for snorkelling, rocks jumps or simply relaxing in the bar, where all the volunteers and staff there are always around to chat and help you with anything you needed.

This truly was an unforgettable experience, for anyone of any age. Whether you are stopping by on your travels or looking for an extended stay I wouldn't think twice about recommending the lodge, with its great food, accommodation and fantastic staff, I really can't praise it enough

Room Tip: Chalets were excellent, although I stayed in a tent with a great location overlooking the lake

I stayed here for three weeks this september and had a fantastic time. During the weekdays I was mainly in the local friendly village of Ruarwe helping with a volunteering project but that left the evenings and the weekend to enjoy the lodge and its surroundings. It is located right on the lakeshore which allows for great opportunities from rock/balcony jumps to snorkelling, as the name suggests it is also situated next to Zulunkhuni River which you can also explore by walking up the river where you can discover waterfalls or just chill out. The lodge itself offers great options for accommodation from camping through to chalets and boasts fantastic food, great hospitality and cold beer, what more could you want?
