Coming from Karonga we stopped over at Ngala. We stayed at other places in Malawi including the expensive Sunbird hotel but Ngala is one notch above the rest. I was fairly confident about the place since Trip advisor's good ratings. We were not dissappointed. Sandi and her husband are fantastic hosts and went out of their way to make things comfortable for us. Well done for the great service.

After two weeks bouncing up and down the lakeshore road it was time to give our suspension a break...and we came across Ngala Beach Lodge. Using the old Bradt Malawi as a guide we weren’t expecting all that much, but nevertheless the review had Ngala down as a relaxing sort of place. There’s now a new Bradt on the shelves (2010) and Ngala has undergone much more than a facelift.
The new owners, Chris and Sandy, are passionate about the place and passionate Africa in the wider sense (hence the impressive collection of indigenous artworks). The rooms have a comfortable colonial charm and the beds are quite possibly the largest you’ll find anywhere on the continent. The location is one of the few on the lake that manages to get both sunrise and sunset, and lazy afternoons soon slip by in the Soggy Kwatcha Beach Bar.
There are probably a more things that need mentioning (tasty food, relaxing pool, spectacular bird life etc), but you’ll find out about all that when you get there... and you really should get there. And last but not least: Ngala is hands-down the best value for money lodge you’ll find on the lake. Go there and enjoy!

You could call it feng shui - or just good vibes - but the moment you come though the gates at Ngala Lodge you forget the heat and dust outside and step into an oasis of serenity.
It's the small, simple touches that make all the difference: chocolate cake for tea, Persian rugs and elegant furniture in the rooms, the horizon pool, smiles from the staff ...
It all emphasises the phenomenal work of Sandi and Chris, who a rare breed in Malawi: lodge owners who love their lodge, their life, their guests and their business, and take a real hands-on interest in what's happening.
It's great if you're on holiday: you can loaf in the pool or on the beach, go riding at Kande Horse, take a sunset cruise or sail the catamaran.
Business travellers are just as welcome: cellphone coverage is good, the wi-fi works well and there's even stimulating conversation and greast networking opportunities at the bar!

We were travelling through Malawi in out Landrover on our way to Cape Town from UK. (yes we are stuipid but its great). Our gear box broke big time. Pulling in at the Lodge Chris and Sandy could not have been more welcoming if we had booked the whole place. Not only do they make you welcome, they make you feel like friends. Nothing was too much trouble. We changed the gear box on site, they gave us staff to help. Great place. The rooms are nice, clean and well looked after. All the staff look to help you. A rare commoditiy in this part of the world.
