Peace and quiet. Fantastic infinity pool with amazing views. Great breakfast. Here you can rest and sleep very well without the noise of the traffic, rooster and chickens. Very friendly and helpful staff and owners. I would even recommend it for couples and families with children.

I arrived from a long, long trip from Diego Suarez and felt at home at once. The place is wonderful, the nights were quiet and the team was very helpful with everything. Breakfast and dinner were homemade - fantastic!

I was so happy to have a few days to relax at Le Grand Bleu after spending a few weeks doing some more intense trekking on the mainland. The hotel is isolated from the more congested areas of the Island, which is really a relief as, though certainly beautiful, Nosy-Be can be a bit of a tourist hell at times (in my opinion). Still, the location is 3km away from the gorgeous Andilana beach. The bungalows are adorable--I spent a considerable amount of time lounging on the hammock with a nice view of the hill and ocean off in the distance. Jacques and Celine were both incredibly warm and hospitable...ready to assist with any request at any time. I did not have any issues speaking English and some limited French...I think this will only be an issue if you are a particularly needy customer, in which case maybe you would be better suited for the fancy resort down the road. And if you learn some Malagasy, even better! I had a great time interacting with the rest of the staff as well, who were exceedingly friendly, Misoatra Betsaka! I had a couple great massages and some really delicious dinners at the restaurant as well. I can definitely recommend Le Grand Bleu for your stay on Nosy-Be!

Dear Customer, Mbolatsara of the Grand Bleu of Andilana in Nosy Be,

We thank you with all our team for taking the time to share your comment.

I am delighted that you have been able to relax in the Big Blue after all your trip on the big land.

The Big Blue is away from all the nightly nuisances, which allows all our guests, couples, families, groups to make a stay without a tourist hell, as you say.

That's right, the Big Blue receives customers from all over the world and of all nationalities. The establishment is not Italian, English, Malagasy, French, Spanish or Polish ... Like all guests, sometimes an exception, you have encountered no problem of English proficiency in the establishment.

Dear customer, the pleasure of welcoming you back to Le Grand Bleu to relax: massages ... pleasant dinners ...

I'm known for me elaborate fact-based reviews, mostly on google. We booked in Le Grand Bleu because we read great reviews. But our experience was somewhat unpleasant, which resulted in us having to leave the hotel after 2 nights for another hotel.

We booked for a sea-view bungalow but we were given a different cottage with no sea-view because some other guests got priority above us- why - we don't know. More details about the room leaking below.

We were greeted by the proprietors Celine and Jacques at the base of the hotel. Celine speaks English; Jacques does not. They are a lovely couple, who share their life experiences and what brought them to Nosy Be.

This hotel is perfect for French guests as that is the predominant language spoken. Yet, this should be one of the main things advertised as if only one staff member speaks workable English, this will mean anyone who only speaks English will be alienated completely through most of their stay. My horrendous limited French really took a bashing.

Location: Around 45 minutes away from the airport. The hotel is layered and rooms + bungalows are placed on various layers. Now, this is not a problem, unless there are two factors:

(i) rain: madagascar has a rainy season starting November. Because of its natural environment, the landing areas become muddy and slippery; this is an extreme problem as there are dangerous and uneven steps in the climb up and down the hotel. This is exacerbated by the next problem

(ii) darkness: This hotel's climb is not lighted well. I nearly fell twice because of poor lighting and because the stairs are not well built, this makes it a dangerous location in the dark.

The concierge is Celine (luckily). The dining, entertainment and infinity pool are all at the top floor. Celine was very helpful and helped us book a taxi when we needed it. She gave us a few pointers about the beach and surroundings. About these:

Dining: Much to say about this. Most of the things on the menu were not available, even the fish. This was extremely disappointing. Due to the language barrier, we kept asking for hot food and kept getting cold food. We did not finish our food and stuck to the limited vegetables. The quiche was warm and it was good. We asked for some onions and chilli in our omelette but I guess they didn't understand and we got the basic. We technically lived on bread and butter. We expected a bit more variety of cheese and sadly there was none. My opinions about food are extremely subjective with highly enhanced taste buds and I take food extremely seriously. A nearby 4 star hotel's food was just mediocre by my standards.

Wifi: Extremely poor. According to QZ.com Madagascar has the fastest internet in Africa ranging from 24.9 megabits per second, Madagascar’s broadband speed is more than twice the global average. This was not reflected at the hotel. Celine did say it was not "european" internet but other hotels had extremely strong wifi. So maybe an upgrade needs to be done.

Entertainment, pool and bar: Entertainment: Saturday night entertainment was really lovely. An independent band with a great bassist and a moderately good lead in vocals and guitar. The pool is overrated. In the photos of trip-adviser this is the most illuminated aspect of the entire place, yet it is very small, measuring possibly lesser than 5 metres/7 metres. I did not swim in it and cannot comment on the water. The bar is generally good and it is well staffed. The overall top floor is well lit, airy and is in a total contrast to what one experiences down below at the cottages. Other entertainment includes a small pool table and foosball. A small adjoining shop of clothes and souvenirs is also used as the office and reception of the hotel.

Room and environment: This is where it gets very disappointing. We were given the Oslo cottage located on the 1st or 2nd tier. Please note these are EXTREMELY BASIC cottages with extremely BASIC facilities. The adjoining balcony with hammock is well spaced with a small comfy sofa and table.

Lighting: Extremely poor. This hindered everything inside the room and I struggled to do any reading inside the room. All lights are Bulbs have low Kelvin value and are warm yellow. I would have preferred the option of having a brighter lit room.

Shower, toilet, toiletries: Shower is separated by a half-wall from the bedside. Shower is very good and is run by solar. Warm and cold water present, which is a relief.

Basin is so high, it needs a tool to stand on. Not sure why this wasn't fixed. It's a health and safety issue. When booked we understood that toiletries would be provided; this is misleading. We got a soap that measured 6cm/2.5cm/.7cm. I'm not sure whether it was for us or for .5 of us. If we had known we would have brought our own.

Towels: Nice and light and sufficient. Cleaning costs are expensive @ 1Euro per item.

Toilet: Clean common commode and no basin.

Refrigerator: Small and in good working condition

AC and fan: Good working condition

Bed: Double sized and comfortable as can be expected. Two pillows.

Bed sheets: We are almost sure they were not washed. They smelled disturbingly of people's sweat and we had to cover the bed and pillows with our scarves and shawls before going to bed.

Mosquito net: Very good and essential. Glad this was done properly.

Shelf: Sturdy shelf along with a small safe: all in good working order.

Toilet paper: Very good quality!

Ventilation: Extremely poor. This was more prominent because Madagascar generally has very humid weather and cross ventilation is important. Efforts to have netted windows would have been good. Open windows with no nets will only let mosquitoes in.

Floor: A piece of wood came out of the floor, so unsure what happened there.

On the second night it rained heavily. Water started to come into the room and this was one of the main reasons for us moving out of the hotel. We prefer to have a non-leaking room.

Miscellaneous: We got an umbrella to use (we have left it at our golf resort and Jacques can ask for it when he goes there next to play golf). We still have a swimming pool laminated pass and will have it returned to the hotel by post.

Animals: The place has two cats and a dog: all friendly and love to join diners.

Despite having stayed only two nights and a leaking room, we paid for the whole 3 nights as we were charged this; we didn't make a fuss out of it because that is how we roll and we hold up our part of the bargain when we book.

Would we stay again? No
Would we refer to others? No
Value for money? No

Overall, our experience was moderate. It can be a great place, but certain aspects really need an upgrade.

I hope this review helps.

Very best,

Room tip: French speaking; English speaking travellers should not come here for a full hotel experience because Celine will not always be around.

Dear Madam,

This is a long, difficult explanation to read and understand.

It's unfortunate that you have not made any criticism on the spot, especially as the quality of services is praised by our Internet users in terms of length on Tripadvisor... Our readers will judge for themselves.

It must still reframe with "a short answer".

You came in the rainy season with a wet landing zone, we are not responsible for it. You are referring to a 4 star; we are not in this category and besides you did not pay a service 4 stars.
You booked at the last moment in high season; it's your choice. So you had the last bungalow available. Sorry, we are complete.

You attended the sold-out private concert, Unique au Grand Bleu, of Nully Ratomosoa's group, a legend of bass in Madagascar. You have certainly found that the clientele is cosmopolitan, from all over the world, and that understanding is good for everyone.

The booklet available in several languages in each bungalow specifies that you can ask for soap.
Yes, towels are included; yes, we also lend beach towels; yes, the sheets are clean and cleaned before arrival.

We are very surprised at your comments about the addition; it is you who insisted on paying the entire bill.

The hotel was absolutely fantastic. From the setting in Andilana to the beautiful bungalows and fantastic dining room with infinity pool and stunning views of the ocean, it was everything I could have hoped for and more. My girlfriend and I absolutely enjoyed our time here and will stay here next time we're in Nosy Be!

Room tip: Enjoy the hammocks that come with your bungalow!
