“Best dorm room in ghana!”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

Having travelled alot of ghana the dorm room in mole motel was the best! Sooo clean... The price was slightly more but did include a good breakfast of omelette, toast and tea. The swimming pool was VERY clean and the view was outstanding. Staff were friendly and very welcoming... Could not fault the hotel at all! I would recommend it and come back time and time again. Basically u can't stay anywhere else in mole!
When it comes to the tours, the safari was great the walking safari was great but do not camp in the park unless you have EXTREMELY warm clothes and good ground mat. We ended up having to get a taxi back to the hotel as we were unbelievably cold. So the tour guide I think should of made sure we had sufficient blankets as we did not understand how cold it could get even though we had slept outside before.

In touch with natural fauna and flora within a serene environment, great scenery but room amenities needs improvement. Also good attendants at all service points. Finding animals in their natural habitat

I thought Mole would be difficult to visit. I've been coming to Ghana since 2007 and always passed up on the opportunity to go because people said it was difficult. Well, it wasn't that difficult. We hired a car and the drive took 2.5 hours.

Making a booking? Nearly impossible. We tried their website and although it accepted our reservation request we never heard back. We tried to call but the gentleman who answered the phone was never at the front desk and wasn't willing to make reservations. In the end Prince from African Dream Hotel called and we did get a booking... sort of... although it was wrong when we arrived.

So, you can try to make a booking, or perhaps just show up on a week day and then you are more likely to get a room. They were very very full on the weekend.

And speaking of weekend vs weekday. On the weekday it was very quiet and peaceful with only one dedicated birding group huddled over their notebooks over dinner discussing the birds. On the weekend the place was mobbed with people in the early 20's in bikinis hanging out. So... what's your preference? Just be warned if you want a truly serene experience a weekday visit would be better.

Our room, D3, was a chalet but it had broken AC. The room is very very very basic otherwise. It is big with a private deck over the watering hole which is it's main feature. Water runs for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. But one evening they forgot to turn it on for the 2 hours and we had to ask. There was an enormous spider inside the screen. There were ants in the bed. There were ants in the toilet. The fridge worked but couldn't be plugged in; luckily we had our own electrical adaptor plug. Our balcony only had one chair. The electricity went out a lot so the fan wasn't much good.

The food was pretty awful. I got sick once. The chicken was dry. The selection was meagre. Everything is chips and badly cooked meat.

The location is incredible. There is a small pool which people were enjoying. The beers are cold.

Walking safari's are 6 cedis per person or you can rent a driving car safari for 100 cedis which can be split amongst as many people as you can get together. or if you have your own car you can pay the 6 cedis for your walking-guide to drive in your car with you. If the guide decides to book over-night camping then you pay 6 cedis for 1 hour of walking instead of 2 (because the guide has something else to do). If you take the guide in your own car you have him to yourself but if you go on a walking safari they just put a whole group together. The driving safari's looked pretty awesome because you get to sit on benches ON TOP of the jeep - awesome for photos.

The first safari (walking) we saw almost nothing but got thuroughly bitten by insects.

The second safari (Driving) we saw one elephant.

The third safari we saw three enormous elephants (walking). This was a once in a lifetime experience.

The good thing about Mole Hotel is it is cheap. Our Chalet would have been 105 GHC but instead was 80 since the AC was broken. There are many even cheaper rooms. We got our driver a 25 Cedis bed in a dorm.

The road to the hotel is a truly African experience. Rough, dusty and never-ending. The hotel is a welcome site after the long drive. As mentioned by other reviewers, the food and the pool are very nice - and you are on the edge of the escarpment which overlooks the park. We sat and had beers on the terrace and watched elephants play in the watering hole below. Very idyllic. The rooms are simple but clean. There was no running water when we were there, so we had bucket showers every day. Also, you should note that if you are traveling to Ghana to see wild-life, you may be disappointed. There is not a lot to be seen at the park.

Nice pool and reasonable food. We found the people friendly and the rooms clean but basic and not in good repair. The best feature is the location, of course, just steps away from the meeting point for both walking and jeep safaris.

Room Tip: We had a fan room, which was just fine as this region cools off at night.

We travelled to Mole National Park mid- October 2012. We arrived late on a Sunday night, after having purchased our tickets in Tamale for the Metro Mass Bus that morning at 6 am (Make sure you get your tickets early, even though the bus leaves at 2 p.m., there is only one bus going there daily). It ook us about five hours to arrive.

When we arrived, we were told we could order dinner, but we culd only order one rice dish as we had not pre-ordered.

We had one of the dorm style rooms, which was plain and simple, relatively clean, except we were limited with running water and had to have bucket showers the whole time we were there. Some of our sheets were stained, but travelling in Africa you try not to notice that! You are not allowed to bring your room towel to the pool with you, so beware if you are planning on spending some time poolside. Our roof leaked as well when it rained, which was unfortunate but thankfully not near the bed.

We loved our time by the pool, but it was sometimes hard to get a table as there are only four or five near the pool. While there the food was good, but they were out of most items so the things you could order (and make sure to order ahead of time) were very limiting, which was frustrating.

One day we went on a car safari, which was great although we didn't see any elephants. There were a lot of warthog, baboons, monkeys, antelope and other animals though, often right outside our hotel room.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the rooms with the AC - after being out on safari, and by the pool, it is well wor...

We stayed two nights in Mole hotel and enjoyed the national park.
We want to confirm the bad reviews you can read here, the hotel is really very basic.
Most of all we were shocked of the terrible and unfriendly service at way overpriced cost.
An example of bad service:
We pre ordered dinner (has to be pre ordered) to a specific time. It was late 30 minutes. Ordering a soft drink with it was a problem, I had to ask for it three times, after having eaten dinner nothing has happened. I had to get it from the lazy bar man by myself (I was told he was *very* busy, which was not true).
Also, breakfast is just a joke. Undersized portions, if you want some more they charge you 8 GHC plus 1.5 GHC for tea. (see pic)
We don't recommend staying in the hotel unless you bring your own food and maybe you do camping.
Also, be aware of the public transport (MMT bus) to Mole from Tamale. You have to be early to get a seat and it takes 5 hours to get to the national park. Out of the park , you have to take the bus at 4 am and you won’t get breakfast.

Room Tip: The rooms are big, light but only very basic. Don't expect anything but a bed, towels and runnin...
