Hideout Lodge
Reviewed March 9, 2012

The Hideout Lodge is the perfect beach retreat. Not only is the location perfect, but the prices are very honest as well. We found this place the best value for money we encoutered during our three weeks in Ghana.

Hideout Lodge is located right at the beach a few hundred meters from the town of Butre. It benefits from a beautiful beach with a safe ocean to swim in. A perfect place to relax for a few days. The off the beaten track location makes it a little bit harder to get to, but it's well worth the trip. You can catch a taxi to Butre and walk the last few hundred meters across the foot bridge and through the sand. But if you charter a taxi, tell him to drive straight to the lodge (there is a dirt road that leads directly to the lodge). We paid 20 cedi from Agona Junction and 35 cedi direct to Takoradi.

We stayed in one of the chalets. It was very clean (if you leave your key at the reception, they clean your room every day) and everything (shower, toilet) worked perfectly. The only thing you have to accept are the occasional power cuts. But hey, it's Ghana and it happens everywhere. The only downside is that the chalet was a bit moist (and you can smell that). So make sure to open the curtains as much as possible and let that sea breeze in. Works a lot better than the fan by the way.

Food is top, although service sometimes is a bit unreliable. Ask if they have what you want before you order. On several occasions they only told us they didn't have what we ordered only a few minutes before the time we ordered it for. But prices are very honest!

When you do the canoe trip with them (highly recommended by the way), do verify what is included and make sure the boat man gets paid too!

Ellis Hideout is easier to get to rom the West now there's a bridge to the village across the river - so you don't need to get there from Busua by canoe. (The bridge may not last for long however.) Once there, enjoy what the Hideout offers - remote, beautiful beach, a few chalets in need of some attention, good food and interesting clientele. Swimming in the sea is risky all along this coast, but the lagoon above the bridge is shallow and safe.

In the evening they light a fire and there's music - and a long empty beach to wander along inn the dark.

Hideout Lodge in Butre, Ghana near Busua:
Stayed in several places along the coast during our recent trip to Ghana and this was one of our favorites. We were able to book a very reasonably-priced room over the phone with the manager, George, the evening before we arrived. In a relatively accessible location, we arrived by taxi from Agona Junction and walked a short distance through the village over a foot bridge into this special bit of paradise. The lodge is on a long stretch of unspoiled beach with few distractions except for a small fishing village. Our self-contained room was comfortable and breezy, with only sounds of birds and ocean. The restaurant and bar are right on the beach and we had great fish and delicious local dishes, including a fresh coconut with rum! The staff were attentive and helpful, and from the local villages. Highly recommend this as one of the best places to chill out on the west coast for its service, beauty and peacefulness.

Days spent at this very close to my heart Hideout lodge, which is situated between two pocket sized villages, were filled with sun, even though it was mostly cloudy during our trip.
The clean sandy beach is breathtaking and ideal for sun bathing and lazy relaxing with a good book (which you can borrow or trade at the small library section) and a cup of lemon grass tea at arms lenght away (to keep away the mosquitoes). The bungalows are big, clean, cheap (30 GCD for two) and (as a bonus) have a decent bathroom. The beds are comfortable and have large nets. There is a nice bar situated at the beach front, but you can also choose to sit in a closed off resturant if it gets too windy.
However, the soul of the Hideout lodge are the friendly locals from the nearby Butre village and the employees, who will soon take you as one of their own and bring you freshly cut coconuts if you desire. They will gladly walk with you to the nearby fort, take you up the river in a boat (we saw a monkey and heard a crocodile), proudly show you their mangrove nursery, tell you about mangrove crabs, you will be able to see their fishing catch of the day and if you are lucky, the village girls will dance for you in the local church.
About three minutes walk from the Hideout lodge you can find a beautifully aranged Zion garden with palmtrees, bushes, flowers and home grown vegetables and as an added value to the place the owner makes delicius pancakes and lemon grass tea. He will show you his carvings (Fetish masks, Ashanti dolls,..) ang necklaces.
All in all, Hideout lodge is a nice place, where you can choose to do absolutley nothing but drink colorful cocktails by the sea or you can spend your time there more actively.

The Hideout Lodge in Butre(30min walk from Busua) was a great place to stay. It provides a more relaxed atmosphere than Busua, and the on site restaurant serves amazing food- be sure to order dinner in advance. Every meal was amazing. The room was clean (3 bed bungalow) and had a lot of space. Friends stayed in the treehouses which are cool, but have less space and are not as nice as the bungalows. Staff was very friendly, made a bonfire, and even gave free drumming lessons on the beach!

Room Tip: highly recommend the bungalows
