The saving grace for Palm Beach was Aziz,(bird guide) very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful without the pushiness generally found. As for the hotel, this was my second visit, it wasn't great last time but it is worse now. Poorly managed and lackluster service with limited facilities and high charges for extras like air-con ........... 2000 dalasis for a week (£40). Fortunately i didn't have to stay around the hotel too much as i spent most of my time out and about. Would not recommend as a family hotel as it might take a bit of explaining to youngsters why there are so many fat old men and women cavorting around with young Gambians within the hotel ............ keep the sex trade for Thailand where it might be expected.

Just come back from gambia been goin for 6 years first time at this hotel and will be the last time, all the staff are great thay make this hotel 100% as for the hotel very bad management turn off all power as thay dont have back up,talk to staff bad,yes 2 mins walk 2 beach with free beds but i would NOT tell freinds to go here as no lighting from hotel to the main road which as you can guess is really dark. All staff bend over backwards to help you, rooms are ment to be cleaned every day but you can tell these are not done some times you have to go and ask for towels and toilet roll.like ive said before its the staff that make this hotel NOT the management or thay staff thay have got working there. I would NEVER go back to this hotel too stay would go just to see the staff

Room Tip: there is no good rooms just because all electric gets turned off most off the day which is not right...

The Gambia is an amazing place, with amazing people. The hotel was really nice, and so were the staff. This was our first time here so we were feeling a little reluctant, especially with the hassling outside of the hotel. This was a bit much to take in at the start as it seemed impossible just to walk to the beach without people asking for money or offering there services like taking you on tours. However, we got talking to a guide called 'AZIZ THE BIRD MAN' who was the first person who did not ask us for money. He was happy to take us through the market to the beach without us getting ANY hassle . The local restaurants were fantastic, they sure know how to cook in Gambia! ALI BABA was my favorite restaurant and kunta kinteh provide good entertainment as well as nice food (chicken curry was awesome). I fully recommend visiting Gambia and staying in this hotel. The hotel is so quiet and relaxing, no hassle inside the hotel and lots of wildlife including monkeys running around to keep you entertained. Out of all the places I've visited during my life, The Gambia has by far the most friendly and welcoming people I've ever met. Hassling outside the hotel is the only issue you will have so just be assertive and say no thanks and they will listen and not intimidate you in the slightest. Just remember to look out for AZIZ THE BIRD MAN. He proved to me throughout our stay that he can be trusted, so dont worry!

Just returned from this lovely hotel, great for wildlife, birds and peaceful surroundings. Couldn't fault the hotel, friendly staff and felt very safe and welcome. We went out with AZIZ as he was a friend of a friend of ours and he was excellent, very professional, and knowledgeable.he took us for a walk around the rice fields, fish market and the crocodile pool, all a great experience. He explained that we had the choice of going to the main Lamin Lodge or a more local Gambia place for breakfast at Lamin lodge, we wanted to do what we could for the locals as after all, they do need our help, so we opted for the local place, its a small hut, probably best way to describe it, the breakfast was superb and defiantly a real Gambian experience,

Gambia is a great place, an experience and really opens your eyes to how life is for these lovely people out there. Yes you do get many people asking you to donate money or buy from their stall, but its manageable, a polite no thank you, or if you can mention some names of people out there that you have bought bananas from before or fruit juice etc etc , they will leave you alone, the fruit sellers are the more persistent but at the end of the day they are all just trying to earn some money and tempt you to buy from them, that's all. You just need to be polite, firm and I really didnt find it a problem.

If I had any gripe at all, it would be that the restaurant don't have a non smoking area, and for me as a non smoker, I didn't like being sat next to a smoker, but hey hats all I have to complain about. Great Place, Great Hotel, Great People and would definately recommend it and the bird guides, Aziz

First of all I think it's very important to mention the price paid for our 8 day holiday. We paid 400 euro's per person including flight and hotel and booked a bingo trip with corendon. We didn't know where we would go and went to palm beach. For this amount paid our expectations wore very low. Although if we skip to the conclusion you can stay in this hotel and have an excellent holiday, however don't expect any luxury at all and accept that the hotel dramatically needs to be upgraded to a basic level of maintenance and cleaning.

Staff was very friendly and helped us with our luggage. The room was basic, the bed had clean bed sheets, and the bathroom was cleaned a little bit (it seems that they don't clean the walls).
The bathroom was old, and not well maintained, but ok for the week. We had ac and hot water, but the power didn't work during many times all the week long (so no hot water or ac). We also had fresh towels, new towels every day. The mop the floor and clean the toilet (that is basically it).

All the staff in the hotel is always very polite and helpful. Before our flight and after checkout it was even possible to have a shower in another room without paying extra!

Beach:
Beach beds are free of use. The beach in front of the hotel is lovely. But the hotel is more expensive then the restaurant next to it. Also you will not be disturbed so much by the bumpsters at the Kunta Kinta beach restaurant next to it.

Noise:
We stayed at room a13, directly located next to the swimming pool. The music continues every night until 23.00/24.00, and the volume is quite loud. However if you ask the reception they put the volume down. Still our advice is to bring earplugs or simply ask for another room.

Pool:
Nice and clean.

Food:
Food served here is excellent, well prepared and of good quality to reasonable prices.Breakfast is quite the same every day but will feed your needs (also friendly people).

About Gambia and excursions:
Worth to mention; do not go with the tour operators! You will pay extra and don't have the local experience. Book with Malik at Kotu Kintu beach restaurant next to it. This is way cheaper, and you have your personal tour guide. This guy is really friendly and does not try to rip you off. We have heard simular story's from other people at the beach. Try to see Gambia and politely ignore all the bumpsters, just be clear and tell them you're not interested or want to walk alone. You can have a splendid holiday!

Based on price quality we rate this hotel average, however if we had payed more, we would have rate it lower.

Room Tip: Take a room far behind the pool, the are nicer and more quiet.

Six times we went to the Gambia and two times to Palm Beach (in 2005 and 2008). The location is perfect: on the beach, near a small river, in the lovely town Kotu and not far at all from exciting Senegambia area. The staff is soooo friendly, And Bala is the best!! The touroperators make better deals with neighbour Sunset Beach: a slightly better hotel, newer, more modern and lower prices, but Palm Beach has the charm, the better staff and the local touch. We loved the breakfast, the garden, the pool and the rooms with balcony. In 2011 we went there one day for the reunion. All still well. Gambia is the smiling coast where they say: It 's nice to be nice!
