We ate here on our second night staying at Kotu Beach. The meals were unbelievably cheap - so we weren't expecting fabulous food. But, oh, my! It was wonderful. You've just got to try to fish domada. I ate until I was bursting! And that, from someone with a poor appetite was really something!
It was here that we met up with Hattib Sanyang, whose knowledge of Gambia - its terrain, its customs, its politics - is second to none. And that's when we decided to take a couple of trips with him - at very favourable rates, may I add!
He took us on a cruise on the River Gambia, from the Denton Bridge to where Banjul seaport is clearly visible. There was Hattib, the crew - and US! Fantastic. They let me jump off the boat for a swim. We ate a glorious meal of chicken yassa, drank attayah (tea) with the crew, saw herons and even PELICANS. Hattib explained all about the mangrove swamps at the river's edge - and the oysters in their thousands clinging to the branches. What a brilliant full-day trip.
He also took us walking along the sea front from Kotu beach to Bijilo Forest Park. The monkeys were hilarious - and we even saw the elusive red monkey. He talked us through the different palms as we strolled through the amazing forest trail.
We returned to Kunta Kinteh the day before we left Gambia - and I had their Chef's Special Seafood Soup - my taste buds are on fire just thinking about it.
Thank you Kunta Kinteh - thank you Hattib - for helping to make our Gambian experience even better than superb.
