“A truly exceptional experience”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 for a stay in November 2013

Our two weeks at Footsteps Eco-Lodge in the village of Gunjur in southern coastal part of The Gambia in West Africa was the best holiday we have ever had. We received a wonderful welcome from owner David White and his friendly team of local employees. Our log cabin was spacious and airy, set in the beautiful gardens tended by Kunjang and his team, with the benefit of solar-powered electricity, shower, and efficient composting toilet. The cabin was kept spotless by Rose and her team, with frequent changes of bedding. The net around the bed was more than enough to deter the few mosquitoes that were about. The evening food at the Lodge, prepared by Alieu and his team, was delicious, with a traditional Gambian dish, a traditional English dish, and a vegetarian dish always available. Breakfast and lunch were equally wonderful. Dodou and his team ensured that we were efficiently served. The reed-filtered pool, tended lovingly by Karamo, was delightful. Our guides Sarani and Lamin were knowledgeable and delightful company. A truly exceptional experience!

“Fantastic location - unspoilt Gambia”
Reviewed February 26, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

Stayed for the Feb half term week with my boys (ages 6 & 13) and my Mum.

The house was everything the advert describes - only extra I'd add is that if you like coffee bring some filter coffee with you so that you can make use of the cafetière.

We loved being able to use the bikes - through good email communication with the owner before had we'd arranged to have access to an extra bike. Over the week we explored lots by bike which was great. Seeing the world at a slow pace rather than from the window of a car.

The garden (and footsteps surrounding) are great for relaxing in the bantaba and doing a bit of bird spotting. It was also nice to have the self catering facilities - we used a mixture of self-catering and sometimes eating evening meals at Footsteps.

This is Africa - remember to use the advice given on the property and use the boxes for food.

The local village, Gunjur, has a good selection of African small shops - you'll find food to buy (eg bread, eggs, sardines, marg, rice, pasta) with market for fruit and veg. If you haven't travelled to Africa before don't be afraid to pop into the open door ways to see what the shop has for sale.

“Simply fantastic - Christmas in Gambia”
Reviewed January 23, 2013 for a stay in December 2011

I stayed at the log cabin with my wife and two children, then just two and ten years old, in December 2011. The log cabin stands in the grounds of Footsteps Eco Lodge in Gunjur. The village of Gunjur is around half an hour away from the bustling tourist location of Banjul.

Visitors to Footsteps tend to be semi-independent travellers, sometimes using the lodge as a rest for a day or two as they pass through. The beauty of staying in the log cabin is that you have all the benefits of the Footsteps amenities, whilst also being fully self catering.

The two large double beds are wonderfully comfortable. We had use of a cot for our youngest too. The kitchen is fully stocked with every utensil you could reasonably need - but make sure you take advantage of all of the tupperware containers, or the field mice will soon come calling.

The log cabin, and indeed Footsteps, is a getaway location. A 25 minute stroll along sandy paths will take you to the beach. Expect to share the five or so miles of golden sand with perhaps one or two other people. Some enterprising locals have set up a small shack, so soft drinks and bottles of beer are available.

The best advice I can give is to stock up with as many supplies from Banjul as you can, and take as much local currency with you as you feel safe carrying. David from the lodge will happily sell you items from his kitchen, such as bread, milk and cheese. You can of course also use his excellent restaurant.

Gunjur a magnificent location, and a gentle introduction to Africa. Well worth a visit.
