“Lamin and Ratty made our holiday :) :) At Ocean bay Hotel .”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2013

This year we have been coming to Gambia for 20 years.
And our second visit to Ocean bay Hotel.
And did not let us down this year.
All the staff are very helpful and friendly which make your holiday and this year we upgraded for a large suite room 802 ideal for two weeks all the space you need and more.
I do agree some updating needs to be done but saying that the rooms are alway clean and tidy. But still one of the best hotels in Gambia 3 to 4 star at home but 5 star Gambia .
We alway go B/B and had no probs with breakfast at the hotel but like better choice when going out to eat and never had any issure regarding the food to many places to name.
I have massages at the hotel and found that Sheikh Sambou one of the bests even i ever had better then some in the the uk make you feel 10 years younger .
Going out the Hotel for trips or walk abouts as we always do.
Lamin and Rattys tourist guides did us proud saving lots of money on trips and local area .
You will find them just across the hotel front entrance.
We have put photos of them on this review they have so much information and history of Gambia.
Change your money out side the hotel and you will get 53 - 54 to the pound we have always done this.
You much try getting fruit from Maria on the beanch and fruit juice from the local lads on the beach as well all perfect :) and a good price .
Over the last 20 years we have seen alot of changers but still a 3rd world country and we will be coming back.

At the end i'll summon the pro's and con's up with + and -.

We enjoyed 10 days of rest and relaxation here.
If you want you don't have to come out of the hotel. (though 1 person we got to know got sick of a dinner meal)

I would recommend only the breakfast and not the all in. Better go for calypso and others for lunch or dinner. The breakfast felt limited. There are breads and spreads. An egg station, going through a doorway in the back. (you can easily miss this) You can get it poached, baked, scrambled, anything. Most of the time i took an omelet with everything (onion, ham, cheese, tomato & mushroom) and sided it with white beans in tomato sauce. Some fruit afterwards.
They also have porridges, sausages and bacon, though not the best. Sausages tasted flaky and the bacon was hardcrispy and not crispycrispy. You can get more but i like to eat warm in the morning.

The pool is clean and enough spaces around it. The beach is clean and enough spaces on it, though here you encounter a fruit lady or a salesman. Not too many and not too forced and if you need something or like some fruit that service is just excellent.

The entertainment is good. You can do aqua aerobics and they perform in the afternoon and evening. You can also get massages at the spa. We were tempted but we just didnt make the time for it.

The minibar is cheap enough but no sweets in it. Best place to restock is either the minimarket at the neighbouring hotel, cape point or the minimarket (cheaper) at the end of the street across the Chinese restaurant FangFang. (go outside ocean bay to the right and the first to the left to the end)

Internet is best accessed in the lobby next to the wireless router. It is very slow, since all these damn Europeans are on it. ;-) We had some connection at the pool and we could collect some mail on our iphone sometimes from the room. (302)

You CAN pay with mastercard but you need to give them a heads up a day before.
IF you need extra cash and only have mastercard you can get a taxi to the SeneGambia hotel where they call your bank and you can take money off your account. This had some costs to it but laughable since you get this great service for it. (maybe 5 euro for a pickup of 150 euro (in dalasi)1 We needed extra cash to get some rice and peanut oil for the family of our guide. (better domoda than at Mr.Bass :-))

Our room (302) was good for what we expected.
The shower can be hard to tune. Either you let it run a few minutes to get to the warm water or you get scalding hot water. Sometimes it turns from nice warm to scalding so always be wary for this.
The toilets you might have to flush a couple of times. The seat wasnt on properly but we managed it.
The minibar is restocked daily and you have to sign for it. It is priced okay in comparison to what European hotels dare to charge you. Maybe 40 dalasi for a julbrew and soda. 50 for bottled water.
You can get new towels every day. Leave them on the floor. Pretty standard.
If you run out of shampoo or soap you get a new one.
Airconditioning was working well.
The doorkey needs a manual. You pull the door closed then you insert the card for about 0.853 second and you pull it out. Then it's open or you have to try another 10 times. Get the timing right and pull the door closed enough and it works.
You can smoke on the porch.
Housekeeping cleans and leaves your stuff where it is. (ive experienced at other hotels they might fold your clothing)
Minisafe worked fine and is free. Don't put medicine in there since the power can fail and did a couple of times. Though there is a safe.. it is mounted to a board in top of the closet. If you drop the whole closet it will surely come out clean. Ah well.

Summary!:
+ sunbathing time practically from 0800 to 1800, can be cloudy
+ friendly staff
+ clean rooms
+ feels safe, no bumsters or sellers on the premises
+ not a lot of children so nice and quiet
+ can stay inside resort all the time (foxmoviechannel! :-))
+ not a lot of bugs in january

+- more old people and thirtiers than young couples
+- omelet station! but for me too little variation on the breakfast
+- can pay with mastercard, but needs a heads up of one day and no taking out cash on it
+- okay service, pool service might be a bit slow
+- cheapy minibar, no sweets though
+- warm water but can get cold or scalding
+- power loss a couple of times never takes long

- expensive excursions through travel company, better go with a local (Jimmy Fixit!)
- no water boiler in the room
- slooooow internet
- bad exchange rate (1 euro for 40 dalasi at the hotel but outside ocean bay to the right and on the block where also mr bass is you see Fixit, there we got 44 dalasi for 1 euro) (our guide also came from fixit (jimmy fixit/lamin colley, recommendable!))
- not on the premises but outside you see a lot of women with a gambian guy and the other way around, because of seeying this you get the vibe that everyone around you is a suspect swinger something

This is a well equipped property, right on the beach, well kept and manicured with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Food was quite decent (better than some of the other high end hotels in the area) but a bit repetitive after several days.

My only real complaint is that there is not really internet in the rooms and so you see a cluster of people with their laptops and tablets in the lobby, where internet is also sporadic. This made it incredibly difficult to communicate and send documents to colleagues. In other words, I was unable to work effectively from the hotel and that was my purpose in being there.

Stayed at ocean bay for 2 weeks in january a very good base to explore The Gambia, it is not 5 star by english standards ,but just remember where you are!!!.The hotel needs a little bit of TLC in some arears, we had a suite in block 9 and we would recommend upgrading .woud also just book b&b next time ,plenty of places to eat locally very good fresh food at reasonble rates ,(the all inclusive light option offered by the hotel seems a waste of money) The clipper restaurant is next to hotel food very good but you need to go early .the calypso restaurant is lovely our favourite food was excellent and very resonable, the surf and turf restaurant was good ,
Staff at the hotel go out of there way to make sure you have every thing you need, but remember to tip it works wonders little and often.
Perfect heat not humid, adviseable in the evenings to wear long dresses or trourses there is a lot of mosquitos about you can get nets to cover the beds just ask at reception.
We found the trip lazy day a little boring and not worth the money charged ,The roots trip was great ,food was excellent and the day was very enjoyable.
all in all i would reccomend this hotel and a holiday in the gambia

A very average hotel, 5* African is 2* Europe, The only hotel with fully inclusive that does not mean what it says, Staff friendly but always 'hovvering' for tips, meals were 'same old same old' but typical of F/I. Air con not very good and WIFI virtually nonexistant.
No hurry to return

Room rubbish had to move, room still not a good standard. Very tatty 2*+
Table tennis played by hotel workers all the time, when you want to play you have to play them???
No glasses at breakfast juice bar
No towels until 9:30 round the pool
Tables not cleaned, Attitude when you ask for a table to be cleaned.
Whole ceiling in reception is dangerous as it is bowing with water damage.
Toilet doesn't flush properly
No serviettes on table
No spoons on table
No staff around at breakfast
Cold food at breakfast
No phone working in room 609
No fan working in bathroom 609
Live wires and exposed electric around the pool area major issue.

All in all there is very poor maintenance in this hotel
This is a 2/3 star hotel and not worth the money
Would I return NO

It was the first time we'd been to the gambia and didn't know what to expect. the hotel was good. staff are brilliant. rooms clean but quite tired. definitely not a 4/5 star standard though (hot water not always reliable and wifi connection was poor). However, it didn't bother us as we spent most of our time on the beach or outside of the hotel. If you can, I would really reccommend not going for the all-inclusive offer. Not only does it mean that local restaurant suffer economically, it also means you'd miss out on so much good (cheap!) food and atmosphere. Also, the buffet food and entertainment in the hotel during evening meal times looked very unappealing! When we walked past everyone sitting there on our way out to Mr Bass or Smiling Coast or Clay Oven (some of the good restaurants we visitied) it was almost depressing thinking about what they were missing out on! So just use the hotel as a base!!

We were the youngest people there by quite a margin! We are 20/21 year old couple and were surrounded by couples in their 40s and over. There were a few younger couples and families. It didn't bother us at all I was just surprised that more young people don't take the opporutnity to go to a winter sun destination with no time difference, short flight, amazing exchange rate and really fun atmosphere!

We'd heard alot about bumsters but we didn't feel unsafe at any point. A bit of common sense and is all that's needed. the gambian people are mostly completely harmless and when you say 'no thank you' that's enough. T

There are official guides outside the hotel but we ended up making friends with the guys at the juice bars next to the hotel on the beach. They're names are Solomon, Opa and Rooney. Solomon is the guy to go to if you want a trustworthy guide. They are absolutely amazing people and we really bonded with them. Solomon took us round the local town, Bakau and showed us the markets and took us to his home where we bought sweets for the children and met his family. It really was an amazing feeling when these children got so excited by a few sweets. we also went to the crocodile park which is worth a visit. Solomon never asked us for money (although we bought ALOT of juice from him every day) and when we gave him a tip at the end of the week he was really appreciative and I think genuinely shocked! I was so sad to leave them and hope to keep in touch with him and the guys.

The ladies who sell fruit on the beach are also incredibly lovely women. Fatou made a delicious lunch for us one day on the beach using just coals on the sand and big metal pots in a make-shift kitchen. It was the best meal of the holiday! (Definitely try some of the traditional gambian dishes. chicken yassa was my favourite.) One of them brought their little boy to the beach everyday who was adorable. I cannot express how much I recommend getting to know the locals and giving a little something back to them. we wish we'd brought more things with us to donate (e.g. games, stationary and clothes for the children). It is mental to think that 10 mins walk from the hotel there is so much poverty and our visit to Bakau and relationship with these people transformed what we thought would be a simple beach holiday into a fantastic eye-opening experience.

We are desperate to go back and think more young people should go too!!

Room Tip: We were in a deluxe room. It was quite dark but I think most rooms are. AC unit was loud and hot wat...
