I love the Berkshires and the Hudson Valley, and the Silvanus offers a beautiful, cozy little lodge reminiscent of the fifties and sixties! Set back from route 22 in the quiet village of Hillsdale, the lobby and rooms rest on a gorgeous expanse of land with a pristine pool open for round-the-clock swimming. The rooms are immaculate and decorated in a funky fifties style. You will never find character and charm like this in a chain motel. Steele, the innkeeper, offers a good cup of coffee and stimulating discussion in the lobby, classical music in the background. If you are a bibliophile, I recommend these places: the Book Barn (about seven minutes from the lodge); the Bookloft (in Great Barrington); The Spotty Dog and Hudson City Books (both in Hudson). If you like biking and running, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Copake Falls is awesome! Good work, Steele! We'll be back. I want to see the foliage and the Norman Rockwell Christmas festival.

It is interesting that he kindest, most interesting, positive people always have the kindest, most interesting and positive things to say! I agree however.. all recommendations are great. My favorite being the Book Barn in Hillsdale. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the kind words.

What a friendly place to stay. If you are looking for good value in the Berkshires you can't get better than the Silvanus Lodge. The rooms (and bathroom) are small but very clean, neat and have the things you need. There is enough room for two chairs and a lamp table in between where you can eat a take out breakfast. The owner, Steele, is so friendly, you want to stay and continue talking to him for a while. He is helpful too as he has been in the area for over 10 years. The pool is in a big open field and just invites you to take a dip. Then you can sit on the patio of your unit and relax. Although there is no breakfast served, there is coffee and there are two places close by to buy bagels or donuts and more coffee. A diner is not too far if you need more then a quick breakfast.

If you want luxury, large rooms and eat in breakfast, this is not the place for you. If you want value for your money, it is a very good deal.

Room Tip: The internet connection is weak in the rooms, but is available in the lobby which is really close to the rooms.

Why spend literally twice as much staying in Mass. Berkshire towns when this quiet retreat awaits 15 minutes from those pricey places? The innkeeper, Steele, offers small, clean rooms. He also makes a mean cup of coffee! It is mentioned in other reviews but Steele is exceptionally helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay here again.

Thank you for the kind words. We do take some pride in charging less than the average place; and try to offer a bit more. I'm glad I do okay w/ the coffee - as I'm not a coffee drinker, I don't know! :)

We love this tiny gem of a motel. It is so special that I am hesitant to share it! The rooms are on the small side, as are bathrooms and parking lot, but every room is lovingly decorated and cared for, with has a big comfy bed, a patio area, and a soothing view of the huge beautiful green lawn. The pool is top-notch. There are fabulous restaurants nearby. We always feel truly welcome and always look forward to our next stay.

Oh... you have no idea how grateful I am for your kind words. Honestly, it seems like happy people are the easiest to please. If I did anything right, and if you really enjoyed it as much as you say - I can only say how very happy I am and hope you come again.

We always enjoy our stay at the Silvanus. Steele is a most gracious host, and treats his guests as if they have just come home. Service is excellent. Rooms are cozy, clean and quiet. Our most recent stay was for five days while attending the bicycle Auction in Copake.
There are many dining options nearby. All just a short drive. The Brothers for Italian, The Inn in Copake Falls for excellent steak, salads, and barbecue, The Swiss Haut for the absolute best steaks, (try the artichoke if in season), Dads Diner in Copake has great breakfasts and lunches. I had the cucumber avacado soup. It is to die for.
Steele makes you feel as if you are one of the family.
If you like the charm of 50's/60's Motor Hotels, this is your place to stay in Hillsdale.
Clean, quiet, and affordable.

Thank you! The bike certainly ads to the photos! NOW, you need to come back after all the green has grown back in, AND when the sun is out! Maybe next year the weather will be a bit more in our favor. And thanks for all the nice comments... and the pictures.
