Roland, innkeeper at Portobello Inn, describes it as a work in progress, and that description is supported by the 'in preparation for painting' state of the exterior. It is clear that the place is also a labor of love, with wonderful decorative details and fascinating appointments gathered by somebody who really likes to collect and display interesting things. The house is a very friendly structure that feels like home. Our room was spotless and quiet, even though it overlooked a main road and was near a railbed. The air conditioner had been turned on prior to our arrival, so the room was cool and dehumidified for us. Breakfast was truly enjoyable: muffins, a sort of quiche/soufflé - hot from the oven at exactly the time we said we would be ready for it, choice of juices and nicely chosen fruit, and fine coffee. Roland and Steve are gracious and helpful without being intrusive, and provide a sort of 'best practices' model that other innkeepers would do well to emulate. Herkimer sits at the end of a lovely drive through the Adirondack Park (we started out in Plattsburgh), and the Portobello is the perfect destination for such a thing. Further, it didn't hurt that the rate was more than reasonable! Should we travel that way again, Portobello will be our choice.
