I was upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite as they were sold out of normal studio rooms. Management indicated the building was constructed in 1972. The room had been cheaply updated however showed its age. The carpet was filthy, floors unlevel, walls beat up, tired bathrooms, and the room smelled terrible. I informed the front desk of the smell, and they offered me a can of spray - how thoughtful (sarcasm). Not impressed with management. Also, no fire sprinklers!! I am a Marriott platinum member and a big fan of Marriott, however this hotel was far from expectations. Stay elsewhere.

Dear guest it is with great alarm that I read your review of our property. We take great pride in the hotel and we obviously failed to meet your expectations during your stay.

I would welcome the opportunity to speak to you in person concering your stay. I wholeheartedly look forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,

Julio Velez

Anyone who has stayed at Residence Inns previously will be very familiar with the hole set up. There was little to distinguish this location (other than plan geographic location) from any other property.

The layout was pretty much the same, we had a 2 bedroom suite for 4-people. My spouse and I in one room and the boys decided to use both the other bedroom and the fold-out couch. This trip included just an overnight stay (arriving at around 11PM) and an early(ish) departure (around 9:30AM). Everything being where we expected was helpful. I was glad to find that the reception desk was staffed when we came in.

The only downside to our stay was the Fire Alarm and visit by a Fire Department Truck and Crew. This added about 45-minutes and happened just after we got into the room so no one had to go outside in their pajamas. (And, it was a nice summer evening out - no rain, not too cold or too hot.) We understood that someone overcooked their Popcorn and set off the detectors.

Breakfast was also pretty much the same as we've grown accustomed to, both in what was served and the quality. Breakfast is one of the reasons we choose suite hotels when traveling as we avoid having to get everyone organized, packed, and taking an additional car trip to a restaurant before getting on with our day. The breakfast buffet included juice dispenser, coffee & tea. There was cold cereal, Oatmeal packets & hot water, two Waffle Irons (having 2 cuts down on wait times when its busy) and a selection of bread, bagels, sticky buns and doughnuts. - I'm not a big fan of the latter but these seemed popular with a lot of people. In addition there was a selection of single serving Yogurts containers and 1/2-pint/250ml containers of Milk and some fruit - Bananas, Apples & Oranges. The hot items included Scrambled Eggs, Sausage pucks and something else I don't remember (potatoes?). On pleasant surprise was the availability of Frank's Red Hot Sauce as a condiment that I used for my scrambled eggs.

The staff kept up with keeping breakfast available and trash emptied even when it got very busy at one point with people using the lounge chairs as all the dining tables (and counter spots) were occupied. Well done.

There's a pool but we didn't use it, there's a small work out room with about 4-5 machines, elliptical and tread mill as well as free weight, didn't use this either.

Check out was efficient and we got out quickly and efficiently.

Two words about location, it's close to the I-90/I-390 and close to some key stores. As mentioned we came in late in the evening (from Buffalo) and it was nice that the Hotel is close to the NY State Thruway. This, too, was one of the reasons for selecting this Hotel. Also, there are restaurants and shops nearby including a Starbucks between the I-390 and the Hotel; the coffee at the Residence Inn is about as you'd expect - no better, no worse - but we like to have a large cup of fresh premium coffee in morning. Also along the same stretch there are Drug Stores and Grocery Stores that are convenient for families that forgot/run out of some item.

All told, we would consider staying here again next time through Rochester, NY.

We thank you very much for staying with us and are glad that your trip was relaxing and comfortable. The two bedroom suites do allow for much more space and it seemed as it was the right fit for you.

We hope that your next trip will be for a longer time and we look forward to seeing you again.

Thank You!!!

One bedroom with a living room and small kitchen. The staff were helpful and friendly. The furniture was worn and in distressed condition. The bath room floor was covered in long dark hairs which did not belong to me. The shower stall was separated from the wall and the pipe leading to the shower head rattled when the water was running. The water pressure in the shower was excellent. The WiFi was extremely slow though the LAN connection was fine. Two nice TV's in the unit. The breakfast buffet was average.

I am very sorry to hear of this less than stellar experience at our property. We pride ourselves in providing quality rooms and we obviously failed in this respect during your stay.

I would welcome the opportunity to follow up with you and discuss your stay.

Based on previous reviews we booked a studio in the newer “tower building”. We checked in to a fourth floor room overlooking the natural area at the rear of the property. The room was modern and nicely appointed and basically clean with the exception of the area behind the bathroom door that featured filth and hair balls that remained for the duration of the stay. The room featured granite counter tops and was impeccably decorated; the wide screen TV featured a selection of real HD channels.

Shopping in the area is plentiful; The Market Place mall is a short drive away, Jefferson road is lined with numerous strip malls as well as a large liquor / wine warehouse that is within walking distance. There is also a great selection of restaurants right on the strip. – It is however recommended to take the twenty minute drive out to the Fairview Mall where there is a larger selection of stores in a nice safe modern mall. Beside the Fairview Mall are other strip malls containing a variety of stores including a large Target, Staples, Best Buy and a Home Depot.

The evening social hour was a bit of a zoo with the initial gangs of kids and teens eager for munchies descending on the area, yet Allison the lone attendant who was chief cook and server literally worked her keister off making sure the wine, pop, coffee and food was promptly topped off, all the while managing to clean tables and organize the buffet counters.

Allison has a great cheerful attitude and she is an asset to the property. Allison does deserve kudos for her “lone” efforts and it is a shame there was no “tip jar” as she deserved to be rewarded for doing the work of two people!

The morning breakfast buffet featured eggs, sausages, potato wedges, fruit, yogurt and juices and was the usual complimentary satisfactory Residence Inn breakfast fare. Once again the lone server / cook ran her keister off keeping up with the needs of the constant flow of incoming guests. There is plenty of seating, however finding a seat during premium periods can be a challenge!

On our last night around 11:30 PM we were awoken out of a sound sleep by the fire alarm.

Initially we were unconcerned and waited a good ten minutes before calling the front desk. Tanya answered the phone and rudely told us that it was burnt popcorn and to ignore it. After another ten minutes or so we again called the front desk expressing concern and displeasure at being kept awake as we had an early morning start. Tanya’s reply was “it is just a fire alarm get over it” and she hung up the phone. Quite honestly we were now concerned about not only Tanya’s rudeness but her total lack of concern for guest safety. After discussing the matter between us we decided that we would discuss Tanya’s responses & attitude with a manager. We called and asked to speak with the manager; Tanya replied “I am the manager” and then hung up the phone. After further discussion we placed another call this time requesting to speak with the general manager or have him contact us in the morning. Tanya’s response was a yelled “No” as she again slammed down the phone.

At 12:30 AM we were in bed attempting to return to sleep when we were suddenly startled by a loud banging on the door and voices outside informing us that we were to open up as police were at the door and we were being evicted from the premises!

Shocked we complied and asked for time to dress and pack our belongings which was politely granted by both officers. In the process of packing up we asked why we were being “kicked out”. The officers replied that their job was only to make sure that we “vacated private property when requested”! Now ironically we had not even been given notice to vacate until the officers showed up. One officer remarked and sympathized that this was not the first time he had visited this property at the request of the girl at the front desk to evict seemingly non aggressive guests and he found the pattern somewhat disturbing!

The act of being evicted was highly stressful and disturbing to us, however both officers were incredibly professional and sympathetic to our plight. While still in the room both officers assisted by first using their iPhones to first look up and then place calls to various properties in the area inquiring of vacancies. They were shortly able to locate another Marriot property with availability. The officers then proceeded to help us carry our luggage down and loaded it in the trunk of the cruiser. One officer then drove us the 15 minute drive to a nearby Marriot hotel. We both sat in silence in the back of the cruiser totally traumatized by the evening’s events that had just transpired – ironically the officer kept apologizing to us and we totally understood that he was just doing his job and he himself had nothing to be sorry for!
Apparently this officer also took issue with the seeming abuse of police resources by a rogue hotel manager, further indicating that they were having a busy night and their resources could be much better utilized!

In the rush to pack our belongings we left behind a pair of prescription glasses somewhere in the room. The next day we placed a call to guest services who promised investigate and call us back, however they never call back. Another call the next day placed to the house keeping manager also received no response. Two days later In desperation we emailed the General Manager Julio, he replied that he would look into the matter and respond……… We never did hear back from Julio either!

In the morning after the incident we placed a call to Julio the general manager. According to Julio he really was not interested in discussing the previous nights the matter with us and also had no intention of investigating the previous night’s happenings. Julio indicated that he stood by Tanya’s report of the previous evening. Still puzzled and confused we asked for further clarification. We were now to learn that Tanya claimed we had called her the derogatory [--] word. This was an absolute falsehood and further upset us as we could never think of referring to a woman in such an insulting manner. At least we now understood how Tanya had justified evicting us. We can only speculate that Tanya’s act of revenge became necessary in order to cover up her own rude and aggressive behaviour as well as her total lack of concern for guest safety and thereby attempting to thwart any direct repercussions from her management by evicting us under false pretenses.

Julio further indicated that his decision not to investigate was based solely on the fact that Tanya had worked there for five years and was a valued and honest employee. We were also to learn that this hotel does not record phone calls which would have completely vindicated us. As a last resource we offered to provide the names and badge numbers of the attending officers who could account for our state of mind. Julio indicated that we could email the information to him; however it would not make any difference in the matter.

In forty years of travel through some forty odd countries with stays in literally thousands of properties this is only time we have ever been “thrown off” or asked to vacate a property. Our record speaks for its self but unfortunately the management of the hotel chooses to believe otherwise.

While it is an inherent risk of staying at a hotel, visiting a mall, taking a train or flying on a plane, fact of the matter is the business in question has the option to deny service for any reason as well they also have the power to request guests to vacate their “private property” for no reason, abuse of such power is also an inherent risk to guests. Knowing in advance that a business abuses their powers is valuable knowledge and equipped with such knowledge we tend to avoid such establishments like the plague, as we certainly will and should have done with this property!

We have also reported the matter to our Eastman Kodak travel manager and he has responded to the effect that “they take matters such as these very seriously and have and will remove problem properties from their company preferred list”!

We have suffered considerable emotional stress from our stay at this property that hopefully will fade in time.

Should one wish to risk a stay here it certainly will be at one’s own peril as it was ours!

This Residence Inn has amazing staff. Even though we arrived very late the staff was very welcoming with smiles on their face. There is a breakfast included with your stay and even if we arrived near the end of the breakfast hour the breakfast attendant wouldn't pack away any of the food until we were satisfied and she even asked us if we wanted to get anything else before she started closing it down.
They do allow pets which is great because my family likes to travel with our pets, but there is an additional fee if you want to have your pets in the room with you.
Overall this is a great place with nice rooms and great staff, if you stay here you will not be disappointed.
