“Red Newt an Opportunity Missed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2010

Poor form indeed at Red Newt winery in Hector, NY. Our first, and regrettably last visit was an absolute horror. We were greeted by a pleasant young lady, and that is were the niceties ended. Our burley Sommelier was brusk and poured as if on a speed round of wine tasting, not stopping to explain the wines and not pausing to allow us to rinse the glass. He explained the last few groups were rude, and was unapologetic about serving us the backlash. Not only did our group of twenty not make any purchases, but we boarded the bus within fifteen minutes of stopping to escape the negative vibe. What a sad missed opportunity, a beautiful location, a fun logo and tons of potential to serve happy customers. Red Newt, take a look at who is pouring. Is that sour grape who you want representing your brand? He needs to work less at the gym and more on his customer service. What a disappointment of a stop.

“So good you will go back again and again!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2010

This is one of the best places to eat in the finger lakes. We were so happy to have them re open after a brief closure for the winter. Last year we made a habit of lunching there on 2-3 Sundays a month and I don't see that changing. Why? Things like the great service from Shane and Chris! I also really like the different way they serve wine. They offer flights of wines arranged by style or varietal, or make your own flight. You can also have a small glass or a large glass of a wide variety of wines. Sampling wines from the region is so easy!
The food is so wonderful and I love that they buy from local producers. I had the open face pork sandwich with a great maple bourbon sauce and my husband had the meatloaf sandwich which was to die for!!!
When you are in the Finger Lakes be sure to make a stop here for a great meal, great wine and the views overlooking the lake and the vineyards are awesome!
The staff just tops it all off with their service and friendliness.

The food and wine here are absolutely wonderful. Make a trip here and enjoy the culinary creations of Deb and be pampered by her staff. You will be glad you made the trip.

“Excellent, creative food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2009

The menu features many local ingredients. Service was friendly and courteous and the view over the vineyard and hills was very pretty. It took a while for each dish to arrive, which was fine since we ordered the chef's tasting menu (5 courses): squash ravioli, green salad, halibut in oregano cream, pear/wine sorbet, duck w/ raspberry demi glace, chocolate pistachio torte. While no individual dish was "the best I've had", each had creatively-paired flavors and was delicious.

“We won't be going back”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2009

We had been fans of The Red Newt in the past but they seem to have become quite full of themselves. A glass of wine is now 8.00, food is variable, and the maitre d' is downright mean. I'm really surprised that in this economy the Red Newt thinks it is in NYC.
