Tramonto's offers a new take on Italian cooking, with some interesting ingredient combinations that put a different twist on classic Italian dishes.

A family restaurant owned and run by the three Santucci sisters, Tramonto's has been a mainstay in central Westchester for years The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the owners have been extraordinarily helpful and accommodating when we've held special events there, such as a surprise 50th birthday party or a reunion bringing together grade school classmates for the first time in 37 years. The caliber of service is professionally attentive yet not at all intrusive.

The food at Tramonto's has been first-rate on each visit. The wide choice of antipasto is a perfect way to start a meal. My wife and I have sampled such main courses as the lamb ravioli, veal chop, fettuccini, and chicken scarpariello; all have been prepared with consistent excellence. The wine selection is extensive and reasonably priced. For a full dinner (including a glass of wine, tax, and tip) from appetizer through dessert & coffee, expect to pay $50-$60 per person -- fairly reasonable for this part of Westchester.

As indicated in the title of this review, though, dishes may be a little different than what is commonly found in Italian restaurants. Shrimp scampi, for example, contains red beans, while the chicken scarpariello is served with escarole and the pork osso buco with pineapple. It's interesting, and while it usually works, I sometimes wonder if the chef isn't getting a bit carried away and might be better served by a more traditional approach to the classics of Italian cuisine.

But that is a minor quibble for an all-around excellent dining experience. If you're looking for the stereotypical Italian restaurant with red and white checkerboard tablecloths, candles in Chianti bottles, and red sauce by the truckload, you might be better off somewhere else. But if you approach Tramonto's menu with an open mind, you will almost certainly come away very satisfied.
