“Delicious food and good value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

Have eaten here quite a few times and have always been very satisfied. It is a great place to go for just coffee and dessert, drinks and appetizers, Sunday brunch, or a hearty meal in a cozy atmosphere. Portions are big and food/beverages are very reasonably priced. Sunday brunch is so much better than typical diner fare. They have Italian bread french toast, the best crispy bacon, great potatoes, all kinds of fresh omellettes, etc. For lunch and dinner they also have creative combinations for pasta dishes and sandwiches. We like the huge homemade mozzarella sticks (delicious), prime rib sandwiches, and good homemade Italian cheesecake and biscotti. Food has always been freshly prepared and nicely presented. Servers and owners are always pleasant and eager to please. Highly recommend.

“surprising Italian gem in Rockland County”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2012

I ate at Bella Rose three times during a three-day stay in Haverstraw. I'm about to start gushing. Consider yourself warned.

At a glance, Bella Rose looks like just another swanky modern coffeehouse with high ceilings and fancy espresso drinks. It's a gorgeous place, with exposed Haverstraw brick and classy artwork and artfully chosen music. Usually, places that look like Bella Rose have overpriced pretentious food. No thanks--I hate fancy crap. Feed me your Italian grandma's recipes in quantities designed for a bricklayer's appetite, and I'll be happy.

And I never woulda guessed by looking at the place... but the friendly, charismatic brothers who own Bella Rose actually serve their Italian grandma's recipes, and every platter of food is built for a dude with a hulking appetite. The meatballs and polenta border on divinity, and most of the desserts are baked onsite by the owners' Italian mom. If you leave this place hungry, you screwed up.

The craziest thing is that the prices are incredibly reasonable. Sandwiches (including an Italian grilled cheese with prosciutto and red peppers) start at $6.95; most of the (gigantic) entrees range from $9-15, and breakfast is even cheaper. The beer/wine/liquor options are carefully chosen and inexpensive--a great bottle of inexpensive pinot grigio from a small Italian vineyard costs less than $25. There's a happy hour with $2.50 beers, and a creative array of liquor-spiked coffee drinks for $7.

Maybe I've been ruined by Manhattan, but none of this seems normal to me. I can sit around drinking a cup of non-overpriced coffee all day, or I can get bombed on excellent-but-inexpensive wine, or I can gorge myself silly on some amazingly inexpensive homemade Italian food. And no matter what, nobody is going to look at you funny for occupying a table all day. That's not normal. And that's a huge compliment.
