The setting is quite pleasant, the live music as well. The service is efficient but rushed. The place is much too busy to be truly relaxing. We tried the famous lobster roll and it lived up to its reputation. The other food, however, was disappointing. The flounder on the flounder sandwich tasted like frozen fish. Everything - from shrimp to fries - was over-fried and tasted more like old grease than the food it was supposed to be. Overall, we are glad we tried it, but we are not going back.

Great food generally BUT by far the best lobster roll you have ever had. Every time someone tells me they had the best lobster roll at some restaurant I take them over to the Canal Cafe and they get blown away by how good the lobster roll is. Be prepared to wait during peak season or go there early evening.
The menu also has many other great items.

We had dinner here on a beautiful evening recently. We had been told that the lobster rolls were a special treat. They were better than special...best lobster roll I've ever had. I would rather have this roll than a steamed lobster. It was wonderful. The service was warm and friendly. Then there was the unexpected treat of live music. The musicians were a singer named Lily and a guitarist. They played the coolest jazz and were very talented. We had a super evening and plan to return tonight.

We had lunch and drinks at the Canal Café recently. The service was excellent and the food was superb. The lobster roll is the best we've ever tasted and other seafood dishes are well prepared and delicious. The relaxed dining atmosphere adds to the enjoyment. Definitely worth the price.

The food at Canal Cafe is excellent. This is a no frills waterfront experience. Just great food, paired with excellent drinks to soak in the view. Great atmosphere, and the service was outstanding.
