4th stop on our Keuka Lake Wine tour. We came at the tail end of the day, so there weren't that many people inside. We opted for one wine & chocolate pairing for $6. The chocolate pieces they provide are a bit tiny (there's a sesame & sea salt chocolate, a dark chocolate with cranberry bits, and a truffle). The paring includes the Chardonnay and then 2 reds, plus you can select up to 2-3 more wines to taste. All the wines we tried were really nice. I was surprised at how well the chocolate and the red wine went together; it really took away some of the dryness of the red wine. My boyfriend opted for a tasting of the sweeter wine ($1 extra). The guy was very knowledgeable about the wines and chocolate, and was also very nice and sweet.

We visited several wineries around Seneca and Keuka Lakes this visit, and Ravines was our favorite. The wines were excellent, and the young man who led our tasting was very knowledgeable and patient. He was able to answer all our questions and was familiar with many other wines, chefs and shops in the area. (The staff at a few Seneca wineries couldn't answer the most basic questions about their own products.) Ravines offers different wine tastings, and we selected both the cheese & wine pairing, and the chocolate & wine pairing. It was a great way to taste the nuances in the wines, and gave us a lot more confidence in our purchases. It was a very enjoyable visit.

Ravines was the first along our trip, and I liked the complexity of some of their whites; their reds are not one of their strengths (the region is mostly a white-wine region anyway). Tastings were $4 each, but if you have the Passport (see below), it's included. I would recommend stopping, as it is one of the better wineries we went to, but it's certainly not my favorite. I can see them becoming a much stronger winery in the near future.

If you are wine touring, then I recommend you pick up the $12 Passport at one of the winery gift shops. It takes care of the tasting fees for 7 of the main wineries around Keuka for TWO people (although some offer free tastings anyway). It also has discounts to the gift shops, local restaurants, and B&Bs like the Fox Inn where we stayed (see my review).

The gentleman who poured our wines was quite amusing and made our visit most enjoyable. Since we were there for their Viva Italia event we were served a small plate of food - this was a delicious pasta dish with sausage and wine. The recipe was provided as well! Yum!
