i don't think you can beat the location/atmosphere of the blue canoe. in walking distance of the shelter island ferry, long island railroad station, and mitchell park, the restaurant lends itself to a casual night out. what i don't like is that, eventhough there are obviously plenty of tables to sit at, they won't seat you right away because "they don't want to overload the wait staff" so they enthusiastically offer you to sit at one of the two bars for 20 minutes while you wait. ridiculous since you are sitting at the bar staring at the empty table that you will eventually be seated at. and this was at an off hour. it's obvious that they are trying to make money at the bar. also, special orders do upset them. i've gone twice and had to return my meal because they didn't prepare it correctly--and i need to point out that i am not a fussy-food-returning diner. just simply asked for no mayo. can't do it. members of my party asked for no onions. couldn't do it. the food is very nice. i can recommend other places nearby that offer just as good food if not better, and much better service, but you can't beat this spot for the view. i recommend going to there for drinks over a meal.
