“Sunset Motel Review”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

There are very simple reasons why my family and I have returned to the Sunset Motel in Greenport, NY. over the last 15 years.
To begin with, the facilites are spotless; on each of our stays, our rooms have been clean with fresh towels daily.
The location is unique for being on the North Folk with the private beach facing into the Sound. The western facing views allow you to watch the sun actually melt into the Sound in various reds, ambers and shades of blue. The rabbits, birds and fire-flies all add to the feel of summer.
However, what makes the Sunset memorable are the people behind it. Two individuals worthy of note here are "Dee" and Therese Priest. Both women shine when it comes to customer service.

Dee will give you the colorful local history of the town, the surrounding wineries and just about everything including the weather.
Therese is a true professional in every aspect of her position. She is the "go-to" person at this location. She has attended to our slightest request, no matter how mundane or obtuse, with the professionalism that one would expect from a five star consierge.

It is this attention to their customers that makes the Sunset a unique place to stay. My family and I will be returning.

The office ladies were friendly and helpful, which got our stay off to a nice start. Our room was very clean and spacious, but some of the details really needed updating. And I'm not talking about the style of decor, which is very 70's pastel and rattan. The indoor/outdoor carpet on the porch was ripped up and buckling, a real tripping hazard, the towels were then thinnest and smallest I've ever seen in a US accommodation, and there was no hairdryer or internet access. Also, the frosted glass in the panels around the door let in lots of light during the night. I don't consider myself super critical, but these things did bother me.

But on the upside, the location is great, the lawns and sea views are beautiful. With just a little TLC, this motel could be much more appealing.

We stayed here fortwo nightsin May for our anniversary and were very pleased with the accommodations. Very simple, roadside motel. Clean and the location couldn't be better. The view from our room was really nice overlooking the huge lawn w/ tons of rabbits and birds. even in the mist and rain.

A short walk accross the lawn took you to some wooden steps down to a very private little barbecue area and a private, rustic and rocky beach.

The lady in the front office was really sweet and full of great reccommendations.

The room was super clean and comfortable with a screeneed-in porch overlooking the lawn and LI sound.

The one problem for us was that there was no microwave in the room.

There is no pool in this hotel, which could be a drawback for some. Other than that everything was great.

Perfect location for doing the winereries and seeing Greenport and Orient Point.

Room Tip: The rooms in the yellow building to the right of the office seemed more updated. theres also a cotta...

It is an old style roadside motel. The owner was really helpful and a pleasure to talk to. She had helpful recommendations on places to go. I am not sure what people exspect when you look at the property it looks like a motel from the 60's or 70's and thats what it is there some updates and it is clean but it is great just as it is.Don't stay here for anything but the views, seabreezes, helpful staff and friendly guests, and thats enough for me

Sweet, comfortable, clean, wholesome, very nicely appointed rooms. Simplicity yet invigorating. Staff helpful, nice. Only, only negative: they need a better rourter for their advertised free wi-fi.
Otherwise, magnificent ocean view. Greenport is really cool.

Therese of Sunset Motel was so very helpful she made our stay most enjoyable. Her recommendations and candor enabled us to see sights a bit off the beaten path.

Although the property needs upgrading, i.e. interior painting, carpet and new screening, our suite was very clean and the small kitchen had all the utensils for making a meal.

The location is perfect for exploring the North Fork - the sunsets were beautiful.

My husband and I decided to go the North Fork to check out the wineries and beaches. We have never been there before even though we both lived on LI for many years. We decided at the last minute so many of the B&Bs and more popular places were booked. We found the Sunset Motel and decided to take a chance. I was a bit nervous but my husband said he had a good feeling about the place! He was right and I'm so glad we stayed there and not in one of the fancy B&Bs that I was looking at. The location can't be beat very central to both Greenport and Southold as well as to beaches and wineries. The hotel has an absolutely beautiful view of the LI Sound and there is no better place to watch the sunset than from the motel lawn, beach or even sitting on your room porch. The hotel could certainly use some updating but it is very obvious that the new owners are doing just that. The room was very clean and simply furnished but clearly had been newly painted and the bathroom looked to be newly updated as well. There is a nice large screened in porch with comfortable chairs and a table and all the rooms have a beautiful view of the water. My only complaints, the bed was really uncomfortable, lumpy pillows, the A/C was very loud and we had to unplug the refrigerator at night because it made so much noise and the outside light lit up the room so it was like having a night light on all night. However, none of these things would keep me from going back. The private access to the beach, the friendliness of the owner, the price and location are well worth it and I think that over time things will continue to improve. I would not hesitate to recommend. We had a great time on our trip and really enjoyed staying at this motel and look forward to a return visit.
