“Nice place for lunch”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

This is the perfect place for an idyllic pub lunch on the side of the Thames. Food is a cut above pub grub. For example, I had belly of Berkshire lamb en croute which was great apart from some underdone 'mediterranean vegetables'. Fullers beers plus guest ales are on tap. You can eat in the restaurant (which has a small river terrace) or the bar (with larger river terrace), the menu is the same but in the restaurant you order at the table not the bar. Also, you can smoke on the bar terrace but not the restaurant terrace, if that's a concern (either way). Service (at least on a Saturday) seems to be by school children who are enthusiastic and friendly, although one did not know what 'bitter' (as in beer) meant! And another of them needs to learn that not everyone appreciates being called 'mate'. But it's fast and friendly, so no real cause for complaint. It's also good value - we had lunch for two consisting of two mains, two sweets, 1 drink and 1 coffee each for £45, which is very good going for the South-East of England.

Worth noting that parking is limited, at least on a sunny Saturday.

In the end, though, it's the location that makes it and in particular you want a sunny day so that you can sit on the terrace watching the boats go by ..... not sure I would go in winter.

Note that this is only a review of the oub/restaurant. I did not stay in the hotel.

We stayed at the Swan and found it to be very pleasant. Some of the staff were a bit stressed but for the most part the morning crew were cheerful and pleasant. Room was clean with comfortable bed, good quality TV with plenty of channel selection. Great modern shower.

Breakfast was excellent and the wait staff really on the ball.

I would definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Room on the river if available.

The setting is perfect, but as with a lot of idelic locations, the food doesn't live up to much.
The hotel itslef is clean and the riverside seating and conservatory are great. Real ale selection is heavenly for a fullers fan (5 in total).
It started off well by being introduced by the waiter and informing us of the dishes that were unavailible. This always helps being told at the start - rather than finding out after you ordered. Low and behold a starter was unavailible that wasn't on the waiters list so another choice had to be made. We had to wait 30mins for our food - 2 starters, jacket potato and kids meal. Too long in my book as the place wasn't even busy. One starter came with truffle oil instead of cauliflower puree which I wasn't told about. I asked the waiter for us to be left alone so we could finish the meal in peace then the manager came stomping over who I kindly asked to leave us alone which was responded by a huffy remark.
All in all a nice place to come for a drink on a summers day.

if you want a nice hotel by the river this may be an option. However the hotel is a bit tired and needs freshening up. Simple things like the fan didn't work, the loo made a very loud noise when flushed, there was a hole in the wall where adoor had banged back many times. OK small items but essential if you want a first class establishment.

The restaurant and breakfast were good. However 6 of us had dinner. Having ordered only 5 meals came and the quality was poor in presntation, taste and temperature. In truth this is unacceptable when you are paying good money. On the flip side the beer was good and parking easy. The front of house/receptionist was a gem but this didn't make up for the other negatives hence our score.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for and are allocated a room overlooking the river!

Lovely views out over the Thames. Small number of rooms above a nice riverside pub. Found service and quality to be very good. Would recommend for short stays, no leisure facilities outside of the bar/restaurant.

I stay here regularly [3 or 4 times a month] and this has become my hotel of choice in Staines. The staff are excellent without exception and nothing is ever too much trouble.

Rooms have always been immaculate and comfortable,

The menu is great British pub grub - no thai green curry nonsense here and I've never had a bad meal yet.

Good selection of real ales aswell.

No hesitation in recommending, even though it might mean it's harder for me to book a room!

Very nice position right on the river. Room is upstairs and no lift I could find so could be a problem for some. Service was quick and cheerful. The pub is nice with a good selection of beers and wines. The dining room is very nice but the food was just awful.
Clean comfortable and kind of good value apart from the food which is not good at all.
