“Perfection”

I stayed at Shumba Shaba eighteen years ago as a youngster and on return to Zimbabwe for my honeymoon with Inna I knew I had to show her this amazing place.

We spent two wonderful days and nights soaking up the location and nature of this unique place. The lodges (ours was the "Federer Suite") are built onto the rock with stupendous views overlooking the Matopos Hills. All our meals (and afternoon tea!!!) were included and our diet was superbly catered for, it was all so scrumptious.

We woke up at sunrise, which we could enjoy from the comfort of our bed overlooking the valley to the East, through the giant glass wall. During the day we went on a guided walk and saw some rarely viewed Bushman rock paintings. A real part of history, untouched and fascinating.
After dinner we enjoyed a glass of wine cuddled by the fireplace with the lodges four friendly dogs at our feet for company. And before bed, we sat under the pitch black sky on our balcony in utter silence, gazing at thousands of stars and the Milky Way above.

The setting and food makes Shumba Shaba a great place for vacation. But what made it so special and unique was the time spent with the owner Dennis. We enjoyed hearing all his experiences and adventures across the continent and exchanging stories and pretty much discussing everything. His warm reception and hospitality made our time in the Matopos Hills so memorable. He looked after us so well (with his fantastic staff) from the moment we arrived and even made sure of our safe return to Bulawayo through the muddy Old Gwanda road.

Thanks so much, we both can't wait to return again!

“What a spectacular view! ”
Reviewed July 2, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

I went for a night to stay at this magical place with three other couples. What an absolute treat! The rooms are spacious and beautifully built into the beautiful rock kopjie with a view that cannot be described. There was polite and pleasant staff and a fantastic walk to a cave with some amazing history. I was most definitely surprised by the quality of the rooms (considering there is no power there was a fantastic solar power set up as well as hot water) and thought it was really worth the price we paid per couple. We did self catering and there was a great set up. All in all I would definitely recommend this place and will most definitely go again! :)

“This is a magical place”
Reviewed June 29, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

I stayed here with my husband and 3 teenage boys for 2 nights in June .... and we did not want to leave. Words cannot describe the spectacular setting and the views over the Matopos. We stayed at another lodge in the area after our time at Shumba Shaba, but it did not compare to this. You feel like you are on top of the world and there is nothing but rock and nature around you for miles and miles. I don't think I have ever stayed anywhere where we have been so well looked after. Denis's hospitality is amazing and we enjoyed his company so very much. This is a rare gem and we would really love to return one day.

“Stunning Lodges in Breathtaking Location”
Reviewed March 1, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

One visit will never be enough to Shumba Shaba.
We were personally met by the owners and spent our time sharing their knowledge of the area and reveling in the hospitality shown by all the staff.
The Lodges are beautifully positioned to allow maximum privacy and the food prepared by the chef was absolutely delicious.
We travelled with late teens who loved everything about Shumba Shaba and it gave us a base to travel to other nearby sites including the National Parks.
If it wasn't so far to travel from Australia, we would have been back already!!!

“Comfortable Cabins and Fantastic Views”
Reviewed February 17, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

I've had the opportunity to stay here a couple of times, with family and friends, and completely adore it. The view of the Matopos is spectacular, the cabins are so comfortable, and the whole place is a welcome respite, perfect for relaxation. It is also a great place for hiking, swimming, reading, stargazing, braiiing, and just enjoying the out of doors.

The facilities are excellent and Denis and his staff are welcoming, engaging, and kind people. I already can't wait for my next trip out!

“Something special”
Reviewed February 4, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

I have been visiting Shumba Shaba for many years and there is something special about this place that is hard to put into words. However, some of these words include: hikes, amazing views, sunsets and sundowners, rock climbing, mountain biking, fireside chats, stargazing on the rocks, swims in rock pools, great food, sunrise view over your toes in bed, siestas, friendliness, walks with dogs and horses, a sense of belonging, awe and peace. I always look forward to my next trip, as I'm sure do all who have stayed there.
