“An oasis of calm - the perfect weekend retreat”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

My husband and I stayed at Hornbill over a weekend in July 2012. Tommy, Jackie and Sunera Millar are fantastic hosts with nothing too much trouble. Hornbill is a gorgeous, intimate lodge with only a few chalets and therefore the peace and quiet that a weekend escape from Harare demanded. The views over Lake Kariba are among the best in the area and we were also kept company by several zebra which wandered in to graze on the lush green grass. An amazing and very African experience. The nightly rates are inclusive of all meals (beautifully cooked by our hosts) and any drink that takes your fancy. Our glasses were never empty thanks to Tommy's care and attention!

The dam wall is an easy drive towards the Zambia border for a bit of sightseeing, and there are boats for hire down at Marineland, a few minutes drive back towards Makuti, to do a spot of fishing and spot an array of wildlife wandering near the shore of the lake.

We will definitely be back, and would recommend Hornbill to all our family and friends as a must visit on their trips to Zimbabwe.

Room Tip: The family chalet has the best view over the lake and is open, so it's the perfect blend of feel...

We stayed at Hornbill for two nights in the beginning of march 2012. The ownerfamily Jackie and Sunera made this stay fantastic. Excellent and a very very personal service. Hornbill in itself is a fantastic place with a fantastic view over the Kariba lake (with beautiful sunrises). If you looking for a beautiful and a relaxed place with excellent and personal service and also amazing home cooked food, I can strongly recommend anyone to stay at Hornbill. /Johan

I had to go to Kariba on business and not knowing where to stay discovered Hornbill lodge. Well what a discovery. I can’t say enough about the place. The Lodge was beautiful, the scenery unbelievable, especially from your bed in the morning, the food out of this world and the hospitality outstanding. Jackie and Sunera were brilliant and could not have done any more for us. I am going back and I am going to take my wife

All the other reviews say it all - fantastic location and accomadation, all inclusive food and drinks etc.

I just wanted to add a personal thanks to our hostess Jackie - and Sunera. Jackie collected us from the airport, gave a personal tour of the dam and surrounding area and took us to the boat for our onward trip to Spurwing. Nothing was too much trouble.

If you want to see Kariba and the dam - this is the place to stay!

Hornbill lodge is set high on a hill overlooking Kariba lake. The setting is stunning and the service is six star.Your rooms are rondavels set amongst beautiful gardens where if you are lucky, Zebra pop in early in the morning for a wander around. There is one room upstairs in the main Boma (communal bar, kitchen and lounge downstairs,) a huge new 4 bed Rondavel, a double and two twins all beautifully decorated in local African style. On arrival, late on a very hot afternoon we were immediately handed drinks from the bar whilst the staff took care of the luggage and we spent a couple of hours talking with Jackie our host before a stunning dinner was served by the pool. The selection of beers and wines is varied and best of all the room cost is all inclusive of dinner, drinks and a equally stunning breakfast the next morning. The care that has been taken with every aspect of the lodge is remarkable, from the landscaping of the grounds, to the rooms themselves and the 'animals' dotted around the lawns. We were devastated that we could not stay longer, but we will be back.

We stayed here during August 2009 and had PERSONAL SERVICE from our hosts Jackie, Tommy and Sunera. We really liked the "all inclusive" treatment we received. The rooms were very neat, the food and drinks SUPERIOR, the fishing trip on the lake to hunt for the Tigerfish GREAT. If you want to really relax and like to make friends while staying with them, this is the place to go!

We booked this at the last minute as we were catching the Kariba Ferry early the next morning. We were warmly greeted by Ludzai as the owners were away and he couldn't have made us more welcome. We slept in the main thatched rondavel which had a bedroom upstairs and kitchen facilities and tv lounge downstairs. There was also a lovely small pool outside along with barbeque facilities. Ideally placed for Andora Harbour.
