We recently visited Tiger Bay Lodge on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, to attend my son's wedding reception. This venue is truly idyllic. It offers unique accommodation and leisure facilities and boasts a sense of calm and tranquility that can only be found in the African bush. The staff's efficiency and welcoming attitude, together with the general surroundings, wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities truly make Tiger Bay Lodge a very special destination.

We planned to visit Zambabee and see Ostriches in the wild, hopefully see all the big 5, Visit Victoria Falls and stay in game lodges over a period of a week in July 1997 whilst returning to New Zealand after 4 weeks away overseas which House of Travel arranged. Flying from Kariba toTiger Bay really brought reality to our trip and during our two night stay managed to fit in 5 safari's, by boat, walking and the usual open Land Rover style. The accomodation was great, even if the Hippo's wandered around the camp site at night, staff did everything to make us comfortable and our stay enjoyable.Unfortunately we missed seeing a white Rhino which had been seen the day before, but saw huge Crocodiles,Elephants, heard Lions roaring at night and heaps of other game. Food ,Service and staff were great. The best by far of the 2 other resorts we stayed at. .Sunrise and sunsets were fantastic.

Room Tip: We asked for a chalet type accomodation and we got it. Don't expect too much, thats why you are...

After many years of hearing about this resort we finally got a chance to visit for a weekend. A wonderful experience. Scenic accommodation right on the Umi River. Hippos were munching the vegetation right outside our chalet during the night. A super experience.

My husband and I just got married on the Zambezi Trader and had the reception at Tiger bay. We had our guests on the Trader and at Tiger bay. All the food done at Tiger bay so all the guests where in and out for food.

We had a lot of guests saying it was the best wedding they had ever been to and we have to agree. Everything is so beautiful in that part of Kariba so the photos where amazing. Everyone relaxed and enjoyed themselves.

Tiger bay has always had a special place in my heart, I have been going there since I was a baby and I'm so happy to see it being restored. Zimbabwe has been through a lot I'm glad to see things changing for the better.

We look forward to many return trips in future and always treasure our time there.

VISIT TO TIGER BAY February 2012

During a visit to Zimbabwe of my daughter, her husband and two young sons we spent three nights at the remote rustic resort of Tiger Bay. Like most Kariba resorts it has suffered from a shortage of tourists, so has seen better days, but the staff went out of their way to make our stay a good one.

We sped over the lake in a spacious open boat powered by 2 x 85 hp motors and were there in 75 minutes in time for a tasty lunch. The chalets are thatched A frame on the bank of the Ume river with bathroom facilities en suite. I loved being able to lie in bed and look over the water as there was a full moon, listening to the Kariba night life. We took advantage of our three free activities and paid for two extra, going fishing 3 times; a game drive and a late afternoon game cruise, the latter being the highlight of my trip. The river was like glass and we got close to several eles and saw many antelope and abundant bird life and enjoyed throwing small bream to a fish eagle which swooped down to seize the prey, thus providing spectacular camera shots. What a tranquil setting to share chilled sundowners and revel in the peace and beauty of an African sunset.

As for the resort itself, the meals were more than adequate, and varied, with a full English breakfast and dinner was served under the stars. My only criticism was that the bar could have been better stocked, with a wider choice of beverages. But all in all I would definitely return.

The boat crossing was hectic having a huge storm on the way over and rough water on the way back. The 60 Km boat trip takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Setting of Tiger bay is fantastic. Fishing very good and all close proximity to the lodge. Staff were excellent and really try their hardest.
The rooms are all in great location overlooking the lake, were fairly clean and functional but the whole place needs a bit of a facelift and some TLC. From our rooms we heard lion roar across in Matusadona on multipe occasions. All in all we loved the trip and with the travel from Harare and then boat trip to Tiger Bay we will definitely go for more than 3 nights next time.

We (3 families including babies to teenagers) went to Tiger Bay on 16th February 2012 for 3 nights. After a rough crossing we arrived before midday to find the lodge virtually deserted as the staff were just returning from a break and did not expect us so early. However we soon got settled in and unpacked. Fortunately we had brought some drinks as the bar was not yet open as the ice was not delivered yet. Lunch was served later on and we started to relax and enjoy the holiday. Meals were always large and filling.

We had been to Tiger Bay before, including several times in the late 80's and early 90's. The resort however had become "tired" and somewhat dated and in much need of some refurbishment, which we believe is currently taking place (one room was closed as work was ongoing). Issues of concern included blocked shower drains, poorly lit areas (or no light at all), dangerous ceiling fans (much needed), peeling paint and cobwebs. We also had an infestation of ants one night. The pool was clean, but cloudy and over chlorinated.

The staff, led by Billjon, were quite superb. They put in 200% effort and nothing was too much trouble. Unfortunately they appeared to be limited by a lack of spares, tools and facilities.

It is a long way across the lake, often in bumpy or even stormy conditions (which make the 90 min trip quite unpleasant) but the location is fantastic. Good fishing and game viewing. With the planned refurbishments we hope that Tiger Bay will be restored to it former glory. We will be back at that stage.

Room Tip: Check for mosquito net and blocked drain in shower.
