My wife and I visited Elephants Eye in late February 2014 and had a thoroughly memorable experience.
We have done safaris in South African and Kenya and had wanted to visit the Victoria Falls and do a safari in Zimbabwe.
The chalets are comfortable and luxurious; we really liked the outdoor shower!
We were the only couple in camp for the 5 days we were there - this was due to it being the wet season and animals scarce but this timing provides its own wonders. Shepherd and Vivienne were excellent, as was everyone; all eager to please.
Every meal time saw the Staff move our table to a new location - a very nice touch, obviously not necessary and I assume they did it because we were the only ones there but shows a great desire to please and impress.
Our timing was very much wet season; very big thundershowers overnight (I miss those here in the UK!).
The park looked and smelled beautiful thanks to the rains though and while animals were less in number and harder to find, it made it fun to spot them and I think Shepherd was impressed with our spotting skills.
Only one day yielded no elephant sighting on the drives. That evening however, the Staff went above and beyond with Katrien's birthday celebrations. They placed our table on the viewing deck, gave us sparkling wine, Chef made a wonderful cake (his dishes were always good) and amazingly, 4 elephants walked into camp!
We did one all-day drive and it was great. We did morning and afternoon drives on every other day as we really enjoy that. Being out there transported us away from urban UK to a beautiful country that allowed us to put away our comms devices and take in the landscape flora and fauna. Zim has a lot to offer the safari/Nature holiday tourist.
On the final drive of the trip, we spotted a giraffe that was ignoring our car and seemed fixated on something in the road. It was a large male lion - and we had written off seeing cats! We sat with him for 30 minutes and then headed home only to come across 9 more!
In summary, The Elephants Eye is truly wonderful and a great experience. Highly recommended.
