I recently returned from Elephant’s Eye, a new lodge being built close to Hwange National Park. Although it’s still being finished, there were enough facilities to enjoy the surroundings, the wildlife, the food and warm welcome from Lynette & the rest of the staff. Talking of warm – the fireplace in my tented chalet was a major bonus, as the mornings & nights in Winter are pretty chilly. It was great to leave the campfire & make my way to my chalet (escorted – I didn’t want to bump into an Ele on the way), where the fire had been lit & my room was already toasty. Really appreciated!
Very excited to have an outdoor shower overlooking the waterhole. There’s something incredible (and rather liberating), about taking a shower & knowing that an Elephant’s looking back at you – in the buff!
Food was great, and the game drives were just brilliant. We managed to do a drive on the land around the lodge which was very fruitful (lots of waterholes & a great viewing deck over one of them), and then also did a drive in the National Park. We saw buffalo, impala, hippo, waterbuck, crocs, giraffe, kudu, wildebeast, and of course, more elephants than you could actually count. Must have been well over 80 in one site. Alos heard hyena whilst I was falling asleep & most excitedly, our guide told us a leopard had come through the camp, but we only got to see the footprints in the morning.
I liked the eco aspect of the lodge – solar power, local materials used, and apparently a natural filter system on the swimming pool. It made me feel like they cared about the impact that the lodge would have on the area when they planned it.
It will be interesting to return & see what else has been added to this great place. Thanks Lynette & Blessed for a really enjoyable and comfortable stay in the wilderness!
