“Second honeymoon!”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

Our second holiday in the Seychelles in as many years and, in fact a 'second honeymoon'
(we married in November 2012 and honeymooned on Denis island which we reviewed last year).
We love the Seychelles island experience, a combination of no shoes/no news (there is internet) and luxury accommodation, then add in great food & wine, and some of the best diving in the world & you have our recipe for a perfect holiday.
We inevitably compared the two islands and they are different in several ways (I will summarize at the end).
Desroches is a larger island and with the new villas/retreats has more capacity, it also has a central Spa & a gym.
We had a beach retreat which was beautiful with it's 'al fresco' bathroom & plunge pool, these retreats are beyond the airstrip in a quiet location and a healthy cycle ride to the main complex for breakfast (a golf buggy collects you in the evening).
One thing to be aware of is that children of any age are welcome here unlike Denis island where the minimum age is 14.
The food was excellent and in general so was the service, although this did suffer a little with the arrival of the 'owners' (Seasons in Africa) in their private jet!!
In summary, if you are looking for designer chic accommodation and don't mind children then Desroches will deliver a wonderful holiday, if you prefer a quieter more 'Creole' feel then Denis island is for you.
P.S. The diving is spectacular anywhere in the Seychelles but we highly recommend a boat trip to St Josephs island, manta rays everywhere!

Just arrived back from the lovely Desroches Island. This was our second visit in 2 years and we love the place. Overall we had a great time and were really looked after. However , the addition of more rooms (villas and retreat rooms) has meant the service has suffered a little. In my opinion they need to watch this very carefully as the place is paradise, but with more customers there , the whole infrastructure needs to support the added volume. The Retreat villas/rooms are amazing and delightfully furnished. The wifi is free in the reception/bar area, but at the rooms it is really expensive ( and slow) at 80 euros for 5 days and this is per device , which is a little extreme in my view . But all in all , still a great place and we will go back .

Recently visited this amazing location in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and had a fabulous experience. The villas were excellent and very well maintained. Each villa had the right size plunge pool and a fully-equipped kitchen. The staff was extremely hospitable and friendly. Food was very good ... both veg and non-veg. Bicycles were available at all times to cycle around the island. The snorkelling was OK (i've seen better) but the overall ambiance of the villas was fantastic.

Room Tip: All villas face the ocean, so none are better than the other.

Flying in on a small plane and landing on this 16km remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is magical. The Retreat we stayed in was out of an interior design magazine (especially the indoor/outdoor bathroom), and attention to detail was superb. All those working on the resort, from the managers to the waiters, could not have been more helpful or friendly. Haute-cuisine was definitely served at all meals: no complaints whatsoever! For white deserted beaches and warm transparent sea, alive with stunning coral fish, we couldn't recommend this more highly (beware, however of the Mosquitos who are ruthless, even though all effort is made by the resort to reduce their numbers!).

Room Tip: For couples the Retreats are ideal. However, for a large group, a villa is the better option, with...

We just returned from Desroches, I was part of a big group, there to celebrate a birthday. We had a blast. And that was down to the service being top notch! They did go the extra mile. And that in itself is amazing. This is my 2nd time in the Seychelles, and I've been to 2 other 5-star hotels there.... let me say this, even one that is far more expensive (in Mahe, and part of a very famous chain) than this one, the service was not nearly as good. And the food here was amazing too. We stayed at one of the 4-bed villas. The sea right in front of us. Crystal clear waters. Yes there was some areas with algae but this is normal in many islands... I do not want prefabricated idea of how an island beach should be, I want the real thing. And as per the flies, again... this is an island. If you do not get flies, you get mosquitos or other bugs, which is normal. In 4 days we had a massage in the spa (great), my husband went diving (he said the Tunnel was one of the best of his life), went snorkeling (not as great as maldives but pretty good), rode the bikes up to the light house (really nice, stumbled into a tortoise that was chilling out on the road), swam in a part where there were some baby sharks, many times during the day I was totally alone on the beach... FANTASTIC. In many ways it reminded me of Vamizi (Mozambique). The only fault I will give the hotel is that there is only one place to eat so after a while I guess it can be monotonous. But for us we got to enjoy and experience the whole resort. They even created a lounge area on the beach itself so we could watch the incredible sky and the shooting stars.
We shall be back!

Room Tip: if you can splurge, go for the villas.

This is a resort with many pros and some nagging cons.

In short: situated on a small island (approx. 2x6 km), 240km away from Mahe, you can find a resort. It consists of 20 "Suites" at the main hotel complex and "Retreats" and huge "Villas" 1-2 km away from it. All rooms are at the beach. But (we start with the "buts") not every beach is huge and beautiful, and sometimes, depending on tides and wind, you can find large heaps of seaweed. We never saw somebody cleaning this up. The rooms (we were in a Retreat) are modern, clean and with a very good air-conditioning. But (#2) we couldn't take a sunbath in our garden or at the beach, because we were chased by horse flies, and there were LOTS of them. The "fogging" of the grounds every second day did not help. This was somewhat spoiling our holiday.

Very good meals at the small restaurant. Nice, but not opulent the breakfast, with a decent buffet and a station for things you can do with eggs. No queuing, instead you can make your wish and it is brought freshly made to your table. Straight, plentiful 3-course lunch, sometimes with pizza and burgers on the menu (don't be afraid, you can always find finer things, too). Elegant (not the clothing) dinner with 4 courses and gourmet cuisine. Sometimes little slow service, when all tables are occupied. The desserts are slightly worse than everything else especially when its buffet-dinner.

Greatest plus of the hotel clearly is the service. Everyone is friendly and interested to fulfill the wishes of the guests. Smiling people everywhere, most of them multilingual! There was not a single day without a talk to the representatives, with a joke and a little melody from the service personnel! The two people we liked most were: Moira - a waitress with wings at her feet and roses at her lips and: Keke - a driver with a fine sense of humor and a talent to make you feel safe. By the way, Keke: we did not see an UFO, it was rocket fuel from "Falcon 9".

Some buts that I want to mention: high prices at cocktails (up to 20 Euros) and slow and (outside the lobby and bar) expensive internet access. Both things that can be changed easily.

Animals we saw? Tiny green lizards (they don't get big), crabs (hermit or not), some big tortoises, palm-spiders, a humpback-whale jumping out of the water, and a negaprion acutidens, 2 meters big, directly at the beach.

Made more enchanting for those of us whom make the trip from the U.S. this island is a long way away. It is worth the hours on the plane. Greeted by the staff at the runway that begins and ends at the waters edge is the beginning of a welcoming and beautiful island resort. They cannot do this in the Caribbean. The accommodations and food are excellent, the staff is very friendly and is there to accommodate anything you need. Add to all this diving, fishing ( both blue water and flats), bicycling the island, and a beautiful Indian Ocean, what more can you ask for. The resort is small and intimate and the accommodations private. Patrick runs a great resort and Brian arranges the Castaways fishing and diving center. My wife loves scuba and was blown away by the trips she and Lisa, a dive instructor, shared. We both had uneventful, but adrenaline rushing, encounters with sharks, both fishing and diving. I highly recommend Desroches, you can be as relaxed or active as you want.

Room Tip: All the accommodations open to the Indian Ocean or you have the option of your own house.
