“Elegance on Seneca Lake”

We were a little worried after we booked our stay at this resort. The reviews were not very good. But we have learned from experience to find out for ourselves. The place was first class all the way. Yes it is old, it is suppose to be old. It was built in 1910. The bellhop that took us to our room was courteous and showed us all the amenities of our room. He even made a special trip for ice for us. The furnishings in our suite were beautiful, everything was very clean. We ate dinner and breakfast twice in the dining room, great service and the meals were top notch. We can not say anything bad about this elegant resort. We will return again some time for another stay.

We just returned from a one night "anniversary" get away. While the staff was very friendly and nice, we were immeadiately struck by the out dated carpet in the entry way and out dated furniture in the suites kitchen and living areas. We also found one of the coffee mugs with lip stick on it. (probably left by a previous guest, but should have been caught by cleaning staff). The suite was good sized, but the window (giving us a view of the lake for which we paid extra) was small and not very clean. Dinner was good but not exceptional. The Sunday bruch was very nice - best part of the experience by far. We would not stay here again primarily because we felt it was over priced and not deserving of the "4 star" rating promoted on the web site. We mentioned our concerns upon checking out and were given a simple apology which we took as an "oh well" type response.

Just returned from the Finger Lakes area after our wine tasting expedition. Made reservations in advance for dinner in their main dining room. Was greeted at the door and shown to a nice table near a window. Waitress was prompt and attentive. Food was very good , but nothing really to rave about.
Background live piano was a nice touch.
Even with wine and cocktails , total bill was reasonable.

Recently returned from Geneva on the Lake for a honeymoon. Problems here were numerous and started with check in. I don't mean to sound uppity, but the landscapers are not a good choice for bellhops. Seeing a guy with sweat stains and dirt stains on his clothes handling luggage isn't what I paid over $700 a night for (remember your valentine package). Suite was not ready on arrival, so we were directed to the varanda for drinks. Sounded great except nobody was out there and nobody came to take a drink order, in fact we didn't see one employee around. After 45 minutes of waiting I returned to the check in to be informed that our suite was ready.

The room (Loft Suite) was beautiful, if a bit outdated. There were dirty glasses in the dishwasher, and the toilet broke, which took two phone calls, and 5 hours to fix. We were supposed to have a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries at turn down. Both were in the back of the refrigerator upon arrival, so much for the ambiance I paid for.

The food at the dining room was top notch, truly well done. Service however was extremely slow and poor, the waitstaff is not trained in fine dining which is what you are paying for. Expect very slow and indifferent service.

On our final night, which I booked a four course meal served in our room by candlelight, a waitress called to take our order over the phone. Hadn't set the table yet, and then wanted to bring all four courses up together, thereby ensuring that the main (3rd) course would be cold before we got to it.

Overall the place was beautiful to look at, but the service was on par with a Motel 6. Save your money and look elsewhere until this property revamps their woeful service issues. Web site and advertisements deceive when it comes to this place. Certainly not worth the high price they charge. If you are looking for a romantic, luxurious stay avoid Geneva on the Lake.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights mid-week in August, in a "Studio" suite. Our overall experience was nice, but there were things that were just not quite up to par for the price. The furniture is very old-fashioned, the carpet was stained, the kitchenette was straight from the 70's, the hallway smelled like must, the towels were old and mismatched, the bathroom had mold. The place has enormous potential, but likely needs a new owner to crack the whip a little bit. The restaurant served glorious food, and the staff were very nice, but a little rough around the edges... the one waitress was very loud (and a little obnoxious), and they all had either dirty skirts or shoes that were 5-sizes too large. This is not the place for a young-hip couple, but I would maybe send my grandparents.
It's the little details that make a hotel stand out amoungst the rest, I would likely stay at the Belhurst next time, but eat at Geneva on the Lake at least once.

My husband and I stayed at this lovely facility for two nights early in October, 2004. It was built around the turn of the century to resemble the beautiful villas overlooking the famed Italian Lakes. More recently it has been divided into a number of tastefully decorated (in a traditional style) apartment like suites. Ours had two bedrooms, one bath, a full kitchen and a large living room overlooking the gardens, pool and Lake Geneva. The public rooms (dining room, bar etc.) have gorgeous detail with classically inspired pillars, moldings and other touches that were part of the original design. The manager, Bill Schickel, was charming and very helpful in suggesting day time activities and alternative places to eat. The candlelit dinner in the hotel’s restaurant was fine. Our waitress was experienced and the food was uninspired, but good.

Chose Geneva on the Lake for our anniversary dinner. The grounds of the resort are stunning and we felt welcomed to enjoy our bottle of champagne overlooking the lake on a glider swing prior to dinner. The inn itself was not very inviting; as visiting dining guests, you felt unwelcomed in common areas. We would have liked to walk around a bit indoors and check it out for future local getaway weekends but it was so cramped and, as I mentioned, just uninviting. We dined outdoors (beware- indoors dining room is very small) at the best table with an awesome view. Our waitress was pleasant and competent however we observed clumsy, somewhat novice service by other very young waitstaff at neighboring tables. Very disturbing was the lack of cleanliness of waitress uniforms.... food stains, powdery white substance...blah! The cuisine was less than stellar taking into the consideration the high prices, which we don't mind paying for great food. The filet was very small and a little bland. The potatoes and fesh vegetables were sparce. We enjoyed a large quantity of delicious bread. We appreciated a small portion of an appetizer not stated on the menu compiments of the chef in honor of our anniversary; a very nice gesture. Live music and a gorgeous evening outdoors made up for the food so we did bot complain. The manager visited our table and was very friendly and gracious. This is a romantic place; perhaps the food is better certain days of the week.
