The Gold Fox is a blend of being an historic inn with old wood, stone, low ceilings, and small interconnected rooms, along with some areas built more recently. We were there for a meal for those of us who'd attended a nearby funeral so some of my comments come by way of the family holding the funeral, who dealt with the Gold Fox staff. In short: quality, creative food, and a wonderful staff that was flexible in helping the out-of-town family arrange the meal long-distance, so that when the services were over, everything was ready.
The family members told me that it was hard, especially from a distance, to find a place that had private rooms, especially small ones that would hold about 12 people. They had made several calls to area restaurants, noting that those in New Paltz had a real attitude about holding such an event; guess it wasn't "up" enough, eh?, so they were told "We don't make reservations." And several had only big rooms and charged hundreds of dollars for the space. So the flexible attitude of the people at the Gold Fox was amazing to them. That alone set the right tone. And no room fee for the charming, historical little room we used.
The family had selected 2-3 trays of wraps and small sandwiches. They told me there were so many types to pick from that they had a hard time choosing. They picked a BLT type wrap, a chicken salad-walnut-cranberry wrap, Asian veggie wrap and meatball panini for the kitchen to make up several of each. The flavors were fresh and phenomenal.
The Gold Fox, at least at that time in May, did not offer potato salad or macaroni salad, but instead served various green salads that were fabulous. They served pitchers of lemonade and iced tea. They chose tiramisu and a torte for the dessert choices, to go with coffee and tea, and they were both scrumptious.
Our server was attentive without being intrusive. We had her turn on the overhead fan when it got a bit stuffy with the humidity, and she was gracious in making sure we were comfortable.
There's a separate bar area, and they seem to specialize in martinis. There's a big menu of many other items.
On behalf of the family, I would say TRY this place if only to support a decent business that knows how to take care of a hurting, out of town family by just being EXCELLENT at what they do! I can't wait to be in the area again and see what else I can try off the Gold Fox menu.
