If you are a fan of mussels, this is the place for you. Waterzooi has been on Franklin Avenue in Garden City for over 10 years now. Their selection of food and specialty beer leans toward Belgian (hence, the name) but their forté is Mussels and Frites. The mussels are always plump, juicy, clean and fresh. You can have them any way you want them: oreganata, white wine and garlic, light tomato broth, fra diavolo, fonduta with a light cheese sauce and ham, paella with shrimp, clams, crawfish, chorizo, chicken & rice, bouillabaisse w/ shrimp and lobster,...and the list goes on. They are brought to your table hot and steaming in a large pot (suitable for sharing (but don't because you will want the leftovers), along with a side of Frites (french fries) and a mayonaise based dipping sauce.
Don't panic if you don't like mussles. They do have an entire menu to choose from. At lunch, they make an excellent burger with different topping selections, delicious salads, and sandwiches like crabcake with tomatoes arugula, avocado & roasted red pepper remoulade, or Belgian BBQ Beef Sliders, even a Sliced Sirloin w/ caramelized onions, gouda on a garlic baguette. At dinner you can get a similar selection of delicacies. Think about their wonderful Raw Bar Le Grande if you're in the mood to splurge (lobster, clams, oyster shooters, lump crab, shrimp cocktail)
This is the place to go if you enjoy seafood, and especially if you love mussles, but go if you do not also. Go with a group and order a few different types. Just don't fight over the leftovers!!

There are other spots on LI for mussels. Citron in Roslyn and Bar Frites in Wheatley Shopping Center. Both are hands down better and Citron has a 6 oz. $12.00 vodka martini. The mussels at Waterzooi are small and unimportant. The stock in which they are cooked bland and without depth. All this was a surprise to me as I thought these were the mainstays of the menu. Yes, beer is pricey but the selection is enormous. In sum, not worth the lost lunch and certainly not worth a ride.

I have been here numerous times in the last few years, and I love mussels. The only drawback of the mussels is that they tend to be of the small size. But anyway, it's nice to eat mussels in Long Island, the fries are great and you can always find a great beer to add.

Came here for my daughter's 25th birthday. We split 3 different mussel pots among six of us. They were all amazing. There was a wide selection of beers and while they were a little pricey, everyone was more than satisfied with their selection. The only thing I would suggest would be to make the side order of fries a little larger. They were really good!

I travel a lot for business on Long Island and always look for a reason to eat at Waterzooi. Try the mussels, french onion soup, and/or short ribs. Beer selection is wide and wonderful. I eat here at least once a month and it has yet to disappoint.
