This is an amazing place which offers a great variety of unusual exhibits and extremely well put together. Take a break from shopping and visit this museum, you'll be glad you did.
Note that there are sometimes special programs for kids so check out their website before you go.

Excellent displays, home to the lunar module borrowed form Apollo 11 movie. Walks you through from hot air balloons to space travel. The museum does not feature changing exhibitions- which makes it boring for me to go over and over again. Firehouse Museum is attached and requires a separate admission. There is also an IMAX theater and nearby Carousel. It is also located next door to the Long Island Children's Museum.

We learned a lot on our visit to the Cradle of Aviation. It's full of history and has enough to keep older children engaged. Not a place for the wee ones... go down the street to the Children's Museum!

As a life-long aviation geek and a volunteer at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, I have spent hours exploring aviation museums and displays. When I found myself with a few free hours during a business trip, I tracked down this outstanding facility. Located at the the historic Mitchell Field on Long Island, the facility and its artifacts are the equal of its location.
The museum is easy to find and convenient by car. It is well organized and staffed by Docent tour-guides who are happy to spend one-on-one time explaining the artifacts and their meaning. There are numerous hands-on and interactive exhibits that will entertain younger visitors. An on site food court for refreshments and an IMAX theater as well.
For the more knowledgeable visitor, the proximity to the Grumman company has provided the museum with a wealth of Grumman products, most significantly an outstanding display on the Apollo programs Lunar Excursion Module (LEM).
For the air and space enthusiast, or a family looking for an inclement weather entertainment option to break up the winter cabin fever, the Cradle of Aviation is a great attraction. Being located with a small but exquisitely maintained museum featuring fire trucks and fire-fighting equipment is a bonus.
