“Not worth the expense”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

I am rating this "fair" because the rooms and facilities did not come close to matching the price. Our total bill was almost $450 a night while under $200 would have been more appropriate. Our room was small, dingy and dated. The decor was tacky, the toilet didn't flush and there were mouse droppings on the desk. The shower had two shower heads but barely enough room for one. The room did have a fireplace but only 2 small chairs so we couldn't snuggle up and enjoy the warmth.

We visited in January and our dog loved the open access to the outdoors. However, since dogs are not allowed in the main house, where many of the inn’s winter season-limited amenities are located (such as a pool table), our choices were limited to going outside in 8 degree weather or staying in our tiny uncomfortable room.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds are lovely and I am sure there is a lot to enjoy in the summer months. However, if you are looking for a relaxing or romantic getaway at any time outside of summer I do not recommend this inn.

We’re sorry this guest had a poor experience at our Inn and would like to respond to her issues.

With regard to her comment on a “small, dingy and dated” room: Our smallest pet friendly room is almost 700 square feet. Perhaps her feeling about the room had to do with the fact that it was in our 120-year-old carriage house that still has original wood beams and rafters. We can’t comment on the “tacky” décor, since that’s a very personal opinion, but we do try to make our rooms comfortable and inviting. On the last day of these guests’ stay, the toilet tank chain broke and was repaired immediately. As for mouse droppings in the room, a simple phone call would have brought a housekeeper to the room immediately to take care of that situation. The Inn is located in the middle of a beautiful, wooded rural area, and on rare occasions during the winter months a mouse might come in from the cold. We certainly don’t encourage them, but such things do happen. The shower size is 3 x 6 feet, which is the industry standard to accommodate two shower heads for two average size people. As for the chairs, the room has two comfortable oversize upholstered club chairs.

We don’t allow dogs in the Lodge because of the dining facility and shared public areas, but most of our guests are comfortable leaving their pets in their room during meals and additional times in order to enjoy some of the amenities of the main building. We have many different games available for guests to take to their rooms, if they so desire, and all of our rooms have working fireplaces, private sundecks, whirlpool baths, and Dish service on flat-screen tv’s with 27 free movie channels. Guests’ rooms are equipped with at least a microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker, and some have kitchens and barbeques.

We would like to leave the reader with this thought: Although no destination is perfect, we have earned the reputation of being responsive to our guests’ needs and requests, in addition to offering one of the most desirable getaway destinations in New York State. For almost 30 years, this reputation has been reflected in dozens if not hundreds of impartial guest reviews, as well as many articles by experienced professional travel writers throughout the country. Again, we’re sorry these guests were disappointed, but perhaps they might consider a second visit to experience what we are really all about.

We had an excellent two night stay in the Cupola Room. The staff was extremely friendly and the area and the inn was absolutely beautiful. I would love to go back in the summer time to see the lake unfrozen and sit outside on a private deck. And we had a blast at the all slots casino nearby. Good place to go if you just want to be away from all your everyday stresses and to-do lists! The blueberry pancakes were awesome!! Enjoy!

Whilst the inn may not be the most modern of facilities, it has everything you need for a relaxing break. The setting is beautiful, the service is excellent and the breakfast is delicious! Kayaking on the private lake was a definite highlight. It is so peaceful here, how can you not relax. The inn doesn't serve an evening meal but there are plenty of lovely restaurants if you listen to the Inn Keepers. Even our daughters had a wonderful time over our 4 nights here. If you want activities, there is more than enough to keep you busy but if you just want to relax just kick back and go with the flow.

We stayed (mid-October 2012) in one of the rooms in the main house at the Inn. Our room was comfortable, clean, good size and decorated perfectly. We loved it. It had a comfy, cozy feel that you'd expect at a B&B. We intend to return next year (maybe a little earlier as we seemed to have missed the fall colors on the trees). We will probably stay in the same room. We read the negative reviews and almost decided to book elsewhere. We reluctantly booked a room anyway and are glad we did. I'm not sure what some people consider dirty, worn, poor condition, etc. maybe those people only stay at the Four Seasons when they go away. The building is old and it has chips, cracks, stains and other minor defects you'd expect in a building this old. That's what gives it character and a comfortable atmosphere. The place is in good shape and is just very relaxing. Our room had a slight musty smell when we first walked in. It lasted 5 minutes and never came back. The place is a good value when you consider that the room fee includes the bikes, boats and other amenities. The variety and quality of food available for snacking at lunch time was good and fresh (and there was plenty - you don't have to beat the crowd to get food before it disappears. Besides, there is no "crowd": the place was nice and quiet for the three days we were there.) The owners were friendly and unintrusive unless you wanted more interaction with them. The other guests were quiet and friendly and easy to interact with at breakfast. We recommend this place to anyone who wants to relax and get away from the grind. Beware that Forestburgh is pretty economically depressed and the surrounding community can be depressing. We recommend a trip to the Dancing Cat Saloon and Distillery in Bethel for a very casual dinner with good food and friendly atmosphere.

Room Tip: Remember that the rooms in the carriage house and cottages are pet friendly, so don't book one i...

This is one of the most amazing places I could imagine staying. The Inn has all of the amenities one could ask for in a bed and breakfast-style environment. The breakfast options are extensive. Eggs, pancakes, fantastic Belgian waffles, cereal, pastries, etc. I wasn't too much into the omelet personally, but the lady at the next table over said hers was the best she had ever had. Lunch and snack food was provided in a self-service manner, available 24x7. The property is absolutely beautiful, and the rooms were clean and well-kept. The owners obviously care about giving their guests everything they could want for entertainment. It was too cold for us to take advantage of the canoes or boats (free to use), but there is a big fire pit the owners will light for you, and multiple rooms throughout the inn for you to relax in and read one of the many supplied books or play one of the many games. Outdoor Adirondack chairs, love seat swings, hammocks, a billiards room, a pool with an amazing view (again, didn't get to partake in that), hiking trails, this inn has tons to do. There are even hundreds of cable channels and wifi available in your room free of charge.

The only negative thing I could say about the Inn at Lake Joseph is that there isn't really a whole lot to do in the area (off premise). We found a local bar (The Dancing Cat), went horseback riding, and checked out the Woodstock Museum, all of which were great. Other than that, the local area has apparently fallen on hard times. Even choices of local restaurants is very limited. That being said, I can't say enough great things about the Inn and everything they include in the price. The service was extremely friendly, and they made us feel extremely welcome and well taken care of. Other than dinners, there is more than enough available at the Inn to keep you occupied and let you relax for many days in a row without getting bored.

Just went back, our third time around, and LOVED it .....again! The staff is very friendly, and our experience there was awesome. Our room was called "Blue Jay" and it was very clean. It's a little smaller of a room, but was still comfortable. The jacuzzi was clean and worked great. The bathroom was clean. They have Sleep Number beds at the Inn....very comfortable.

Food there was great! They have a serve yourself kitchenette, and also, the full breakfast in the morning is awesome. The grounds outside are kept nice and clean and there is a nice hike to the lake and around the lake, too. It's beautiful.
Love it so much will most likely return again soon!

Room Tip: If you stay in the actual Mansion House (the main house) we have stayed in the Kingfisher before and...

The Inn, with working fireplaces, whirlpool baths and private sundecks, is located in Upstate New York on a 250-acre private lake. Like resort lodging, Inn at Lake Joseph provides a variety of summer and winter recreational facilities, including access to a health and fitness spa. But unlike larger hotels, with just 18 guestrooms, a luxurious, yet informal, casual country retreat that assures guests a relaxing, private, rustic mountain lake environment awaits. Very much like the Berkshires, White Mountains, Adirondacks and Poconos, the Catskills surrounding the Inn offer spectacular scenes of lakes and rivers, as well as hiking trails with views of majestic peaks and isolated waterfalls. However, unlike these other regions, The Inn is no more than 2 hours from New York City. ... more   less
