“Better than Chinatown”

Flushing is absolutely amazing. There are a lot of great places to eat, shop, and even a few good places to drink at.

“a delightful surprise”

This was our second two week visit in 2 years and we'll definitely return. We stayed in Chinatown, in Flushing because it was affordable and close to the US Open tennis tournament that we attended in '08 and '09. We didn't expect to like Flushing as much as we did. The Historic walking tour revealed to us some fascinating aspects of US and NY history that were very important re:religious freedom and the precedent for the 1st amendment; Latimer's invention of the filament that made the incandescent light bulb functional after so many failed attempts by Edison; second oldest continuously functioning church in the US, a Quaker meeting house. We were fascinated by the fish and vegetable markets where the fish is swimming in the tank, then chosen by the customer, killed and cleaned and scaled by the fish seller and waltzed out of the store 5 minutes later. We ate breakfast at the French Baguette bakery every day which rivaled the best pastries we had in Paris. All of this is accessible within blocks of the Flushing Public Library and the 3600 block of Main Street. There is more to explore and more Chinese and Thai restaurants to try. Next time we hope to visit the Louis Armstrong Museum.
