“Great Food, Low Cost”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

The service, ambiance and general food is okay. Nothing impressive, not terrible. As of July 2012, the place has a B rating, which is never my first choice. However, the steamed dumplings (I call soup dumplings) are incredible. It's like a little slurp of soup right in your dumpling. They come in crab and pork (no vegetarian option that I know of) and are warm and delicious! I highly recommend them.

“A 'C' rating from the health inspector”
Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

We love their food, especially their trademark soup dumplings, but when we went there tonight they had a 'C' rating sticker in the window. Don't know why & they were still crowded but you might think twice until they get the 'A' rating back since it takes a lot to get a sanitary rating below an 'A'.

“The Real Deal!”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

Our Quest to find the BEST Chinese Restaurant on all of Long Island took us tonight to virgin territories. Our Crusade crossed the veritable dividing line between Nassau County ("Long Island"), and Queens (New York City) deep in to the heart of Flushing, NY. We queried various sources, resources, databases, and wiki's, and concluded that both Queens (and Brooklyn too for that matter) are geographically connected to the Nassau (and Suffolk) Counties, thus making one VERY Long Island. So, with that technical hurdle overcome, and our conscience cleared we found ourselves in the mecca of Chinese (and other Asian) restaurants.

Our Destination:

Joe's Shanghai

Mind you, we came on a Monday night, and the restaurant was packed! The lobby was filled with people waiting to be seated. But like the Mee's parting the Red Sea, we were immediately shown to a lovely round table in the heart of the restaurant. There was no preferential treatment (as we heard a couple say to each other as we passed on our way to our seats, "That's the key! You have to come as a party of five.")... we just got lucky. But, our luck was just beginning. Of course, I doubt it was luck, but the master skills of their Chefs that dazzled our taste buds, and left us wanting more and more. Literally!

This was a real authentic Chinese restaurant. The kind we've been looking for. No sugars and sweeteners to go with the tea. No fried noodles to munch on. No spare ribs on the menu (Heaven forbid! What were we to do without our staple for comparative purposes??). Joe's Shanghai has a few different locations, including one in Chinatown, one in midtown, as well as in China and even Japan. But, it all started at this very location in Flushing, NY.

You wouldn't believe what we polished off!

First we started with the soup dumplings (one order of pork, the other crab). Fair warning to anyone who has never eaten soup dumplings before. The contents ARE hot!! Not spicy! Temperature HOT! Joe's Shanghai is famous for their soup dumplings, and our meal got off to a fabulous start!

There were a few specials posted on the board which caught our eye, and our waiter Jonathan gave the thumbs up to two of their specials, and help us order what amounted to a banquet for our lucky taste buds and bellies.

“Awesome Dumplings with Soup inside, Meatballs, Fish and Bok Choy”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

This place has positive vibes! During the dinner time you will be queuing to get in - it is worth it and nobody will rush you! It is super loud inside as people are talking and there are around 50 in the restaurant. This is not a place for the romantic dinner, it is a place for a nice Chinese food. I loved their signature dumplings with soup, meatballs were super delicate, fish was crunchy and fresh and bok choy is a bok choy - always works ;)

TIPS:
1. Do not wear fancy clothes - just be casual. There is a risk of having soup from dumplings on your shirt.
2. Bring cash - they do not accept credit cards.
3. Note tip that they add automatically. The reason is that there are many Chinese people coming and they do not tip ;) So here we go, tip is added. I personally like the attitude as it comes from the situation not just being greedy.
4. Bring friends - the more people the better.

I have been here twice and I will be back.

“Always a yummy time!”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

I go to Joe's Shanghai all the time. The staff is great, and the food even better! The crab pork dumplings are the best. Sometimes it can get crowded, but that's because the word has gotten out about their food. Highly recommended!
