When the Craftsman Inn opened it was a charming little hotel decorated in the Arts and Crafts style, convenient to the Fayetteville-Dewitt area of Syracuse area. It's still convenient but the charm is gone. Carpets throughout are filthy and worn, the elevator is scratched and dented (seems to ride lethargically, too) and the bathrooms are a bit grotty, with scratched tubes and stained grout.

The staff is pleasant and kind, and the location can't be beat - so come on, Craftspeople, get this place back to its former pristine presentation.

Room Tip: Be careful to stay away from the blower for HVAC, located on the first floor, inside court. Might wa...

Thank you for your observations. Each of the area that you mentioned as needing improvements are actually on this Summer's project agenda. Bathrooms are being re-grouted and refinished, carpeting throughout is being taken care of, and the elevators have seen alot of attention.
Your kind words about the inn and our staff are appreciated, and we hear your message. I think you will be pleased the next time your travels bring you to the Fayetteville and Dewitt area.

I booked a room at the Craftsman Inn to attend a function being held nearby. My husband and I entered the dingy lobby to check in and I noticed the stained carpet. Ok, it was just the lobby. I was hoping to work out in the morning, so I checked out the fitness room (upstairs from the lobby). It was smelly, dirty, had no clean towels or water in the cooler and dirty towels were hanging out of the towel bin. My husband used the nearby restroom and found it filthy as well, including toenails on the floor - yuck!! Ok, two strikes. On to our room. We entered through "hallway 4" and promptly smelled skunk. Yuck again. We entered our room (#128) and found it smelling dank and moldy. The carpet felt damp and dirty. There were cobwebs by the ancient air conditioner. Gross! Strike three. We went out to the bar on site (in a separate building) to get a drink. It was 10:30 on a Friday night. There was a table full of people in the bar but we were told they were no longer serving (even though the table of people were still there a half hour later after we returned from getting a drink at a restaurant across the street). Strike four and we were out. I have to say that the man at the desk was understanding and accommodating so we were not charged for the room. Go to the nearby Holiday Inn Express. It's much cleaner and more comfortable. That's what we did.

We stayed at The Craftsman Inn 3 nights mid-May. The staff was friendly and attentive. Our rooms was clean, and there was easy access to the parking lot through a nearby door that was locked for security. We were in room 129. The furniture was solid and represented the work of local craftsmen...hence the name if the inn. It was handy having a computer and printer in the lobby.

Next door is The Grill owned by the Inn. The wait staff was wonderful and recognized and acknowledged us every time we ate there. We were going to explore other eateries, but honestly, the food was so good that we just ate there.

The inn is situated next to a quiet residential area, which was great for walking and running.

We woud stay there again.

Thank you for taking the time to write your observations. You are correct that the furnishing throughout the Craftsman and The Limestone Grille are created by the artisans at Stickley & Co. , who have been making world class furniture in the Fayettevllle area for over a century.
Thank you also from the staff of The Limestone for recognizing their efforts. With so many great dining options right outside our door, its very gratifying that you so supportive of us during your stay.

My daughter attends Colgate university and we have stayed here several times while visiting her over the last few years. Every time we come here the place gets more run down. It appears the management is not keeping up with basic repairs and maintenance. We stay because of convenience not because we want to. They need to overhaul the place soon or it will be too late.

The website looked as though it might be a pretty decent place for the a few nights. We were so wrong! Let's start with the service. The young lady was rude when she couldn't initially find our reservations. She was insinuating that were lying about making reservations. When she finally found us there was no apology. I suppose her attitude is consistent with furnishings in the lobby, very cold and uninviting. Our experience only gets worse. The rooms are very outdated and weren't clean. Temperature control was out of the question as our room was warm and stuffy. At this point I wanted to voice a complaint to the manager. His name is Alan. What a piece of work! I'm not sure where they get guys like this but I swear they just pick them off the street. He was interested in our displeasure with service and the room. He said he would speak to the front desk person but it seemed like just lip service. As far as the room he said they have been working on the temperature control. That's it. No apology, nothing. If it wasn't for the fact that we were so tired we would have left immediately. We did, however, cancel our remaining nights. There are plenty of fine hotels in the area. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one.

Room Tip: Make certain you read all the reviews when contemplating a hotel. When I looked more thoroughly I sa...

It is clear that we have triggered some extreme level of wrath here. It is bewildering. As best as we are able to determine, the front desk associate that our guest refers to is the same young woman who is praised so often in previous reviews. While anyone can have an off encounter in a professional setting, it is hard for us to imagine any of our staff being as uncaring and belligerent as this review suggests. And our front desk manager whom is treated in such an improper and mean-spirited manner is a kind and gracious person who has been with our inn for over 13 years. The type of response attributed to him is anathema to his personality!
When you enter The Craftsman Inn, our lobby is a comfortable, open space, with a large stone fireplace straight ahead of you, Spanish wool carpeting, beautiful Stickley Mission Oak furnishing. Not stuffy, but certainly not cold nor uninviting. And while we are an older inn and absolutely do have some of the wear and tear that come with that age, we strive to maintain clean and comfortable rooms, also furnished with that Stickley Mission decor. It is hard to categorize such a classic design style as out-dated; perhaps it does strike some in such a manner.
We will continue to strive to create a pleasurable experience for our guests. The continuous support of our very large family of return guests reinforce that our efforts are appreciated.

My sister and I stayed here while visiting our grandparents in a nearby senior housing facility. It was literally a mile away, so this was the most convenient option. We were pleased that they were able to put us in a room with two double beds instead of the King room we had to reserve by phone several weeks earlier. The girls at the front desk seemed a little out of it, but pleasant. They first sent us to a room that hadn't been cleaned yet, I feel sorry for the person that had to clean that bathroom later! They were apologetic and sent us to another room. It was very clean, with a nice big TV (we needed it because there wasn't much going on in Fayetteville). The bed was fairly comfortable and the water pressure was decent in the bathroom. The hotel is affiliated with the restaurant next door where you get a 20% discount on your bill, although the food is a little overpriced for what it is. The whole place needs an upgrade to bring an average experience to at least a very good.

We spent one night at the Craftsman Inn, which looks a lot better online than in person. Front desk staff was indifferent. Despite the craftsman furniture in the lobby, there's nothing charming, warm or inviting. The hallways are dark, with ugly carpet. The place is screaming for a makeover. Rooms are small and dated. Bathroom is tiny. Heat is hard to control; we had to keep our window open all night. When I mentioned it in the morning to the front desk clerk, she said, "Yes, several people have mentioned that." Nothing is particularly dirty, but nothing seems clean either. The rocker in the bedroom is a nice touch. Beds are comfortable. There is coffee in the lobby. If you need a place for a quick stay, it's fine.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor to avoid having anyone over us, but the walls are very thin and we cou...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The American Arts and Crafts Movement blossomed at the turn of the 20th century on the tree lined streets of peaceful villages in upstate New York. The movement was a personal and architectural revolt against the ornateness of the Victorian style. This Movement sparked a period of design characterized by simplicity, honestly and integrity. Here in Fayetteville, Leopold and John George Stickley created Arts and Crafts furniture using innovative construction techniques which have endured as hallmarks of the Movement. The Craftsman Inn is dedicated to these Craftsman ideals. Look around, the designs that inspire the building, the chairs and tables, the lighting and pictures, all evoke that ideal. Our Limestone Grille was launched in 2008 as the heir to our more stately Craftsman House. The Limestone reflects the 21st century evolution of these concepts as once again a desire for a simpler, truer, more authentic approach becomes prevalent. Our dining room and lounge reflect clean, Mission style design but with warm colors, classic furnishings, and contemporary appointments. Our service staff and bartenders provide friendly yet attentive service, knowledgeable without being presumptuous, helping to create the sense of relaxed comfort we all seem to miss so much of the time. That end result is what inspires us to do the best we can. ... more   less
