Owner description: Long Island beach in Queens borough that can be reached by subway. Popular destination for New Yorkers in mid-20th century, still pleasant to visit.

I made a couple of nice videos on this beach. I grew up in this area and i never had any problems ever. I only remember good times on this beach bike riding dancing playing basketball etc. I am ?? years old now and i still drive down to the beach once in awhile just to think, walk ,listen to my ipod and get some sun always a pleasent experience.

Rockaway beach the biggest urban beach in the United States, sretching In some sections you can find housing projects with some of the NYC's poorest people and in some sections you have some of NYC's richest people.
Some sections you will find the a major bird sacturary which is protecting several shore birds from extinction.
This not your ordinary beach. Yes we are New York City, yet we have surfing beaches second only to California and Hawaii. People come from all over the world and ride our waves.
Is our beach dirty at times? Absolutely! Of course it's going to get dirty after 200,000 people visit on some weekends, But everyday starts off as clean as any beach in the tri-state area.
The NYC Dept. of Parks does a great job with what they have. Unfortunately what they don't have is lots of money. Many local community groups pitch in as volunteers to help in keeping the beach clean. Rockaway Beach has always been and always will be free for all the world to enjoy. We don't have the good fortune of hiring a hundred seasonal workers as some pay as you go beaches.
Rockaway is kind of a long ride for most, but can be reached by the Q53. Q21 b35 buses and you can ride the A train to reach the beaches between Beach 9th and Beach 72nd. You can transfer for the "S" Shuttle at Broad Channel on the A line and reach Beach 72nd to Beach 116. If you're driving you can park at one of two large free parking fields, one is located at beach 17th street and another is located at beach 95th street, but get there early spots go fast.

There is something for everyone along our 6+ miles of beaches Beach 9-28 has a brand new park, is quiet and near an inlet with very small waves Beaches 32-55th are protected for endangered shorebirds, but great to stroll along boardwalk and see birds you've never seen before . Beach 56th to beach 66th are good swimming beaches, but check parks website to see if life guards are on duty the day you come. Beach 67th is one of two surfing beachesBeach 70th-86th are nice quiet beaches with a nice moderate amount of people.
The beaches between 72nd and beach 109th are adjacent to Shore Front Pkwy which has handball courts and basketball courts and playground.
The beaches between 87th-91st are the best surfing beaches. in the North east as surfboard only beaches . Although the beaches between 92nd and 109th can be very crowded due to a very narrow beach, this is where you find the best waves for body surfing and a great mix of people from all walks of life. You can also get some of the best food in town from the famous Rockaway Taco to organic salads a nice micro brewed beer up on the boards and on Rock. Bch. Blvd. get a slice or a pie at Elegante at 92nd St. a great bagel at 96st or 108st or tasty Hero at the 101st deli. If you want a great burger and a beer you can hit The Tap and Grill on 98st.
From beach 110th to 114 you get more of a quiet beach. Beach 116th St is NOT for the faint of heart beaches 118th to 149 are great beaches to relax on.

You can find restrooms at beach 87st beach 98th beach106th and the boardwalk.
Wheel chair access at beach 103 and beach 91st(surf beach)

As you may know I love my Rockaway Beach a great place to visit a great place to live( As long as you remember you are in an urban setting)

Please remember to put your trash in a trash can!

One of the dirtiest, poorly kept ocean-front areas i have ever seen. Beaches are located near mental health facilities which make it uncomfortable. They have had a serious problem with youth gangs causing problems on the beaches the last few years. Be careful.

That musty smell I remember from my youth is still pervasive there. Add to that the dilapidated dwellings and there should be a lot of "shovel-ready jobs" there!
